Need help to plan Rome-Tuscany
hi
My DH and my parents want to do a vacation together in June, around 17-27th, thinking 17th -19th in Rome then rent a car and drive to Tuscany and stay there for a few days, around 6 and do day trips. The place that we were thinking of staying was Borgo Di Vagali wondering if anyone has stayed there. Another option was Cinque Terra, can we do that from Tuscany? or the other option was Amalfi coast, including Capri. what would you recommend? thanks!! |
First, please tell us if any of you have been to Rome before.
If not, I would extend the Rome nights and that would influence the Tuscany answers. |
Hello!
My hubby and I have been twice before and done all the sight seeing , my parents went there for a day, as a stop over on a cruise. We were thinking of perhaps doing Rome, then going to see CinqueTerra, after that going to Tuscany. Can anyone help us with planning? we would like to drive, as after this , we are heading to NYC so we have quite a few bags! thank you!! |
You need to get a map so you can see the distances between cities. Also look at online map websites like www.mappy.com. Of course, lots of us have been to Rome, you can do a search on this forum to see thousands of questions asked int the past. I am not familiar with Borgo di Vagali..is that the street name or the hotel? If you type in the name of the hotel in the search field you can see if it has been mentioned in previous threads. Also look for reviews on tripadvisor.co and slowtrav.com.
Tuscany, Amalfi and the CT have are in very different areas of the country so you need to check drive times on the sites I mentioned above. You need to think about what interests you and the others traveling with you and make you decision based on that. |
I would recommend 3 nights in Rome especially if you are arriving on the 17th and will be jet-lagged that day. This would give your parents two full days to explore the city a little more (they must have seen very little on a day trip during a cruise) and you and your husband a chance to see some new sights as well.
I have been to Rome three times and the third visit, for 8 days last year, was the most enjoyable because the longest. We came back with a whole new list of things we still haven't seen. |
I, too, am stumped with "Borgo Di Vagali". Where is that?
As I read it, you are planning 7 nights outside Rome (return flight out of Rome?). Cinque Terre is hard to do from Tuscany...believe me, I've tried to work it into our trips. But we were in Chianti and southern Tuscany. With 7 nights you might work it in. Could you take the train from Rome or will there be too much luggage? Rome to La Spezia is 4 hours: leaves 10am, arrives 2pm. If that works, you could stay in CT, then p/up car in La Spezia for the drive to Tuscany. |
there is a Borgo di Vagli "fractional ownership" community in Tuscany near Cortona. Could that be it?
|
HI everyone, thanks for the resposes.
Yes, Borgo di Vagali, is like a fractional ownership, its rented through timeshare companies, but also directly (thats how I am booking it). It was recently featured in the architecural magazine, for their amazing before and after renovations. I think we can perhaps do 3 nights in rome then drive up, stay somewhere else in the Tuscan region and then hit this resort, from the 21st onwards. I was quite keen to do Cinque Terra, by car, as we have too much luggage! ( 2 bags /per person! )LOL. If anyone has any recommended places to see , please let me know. We are planning on doing Pisa and Florance, but we all enjoy wine, so want to get all that in too!! thanks so much! We will fly out of Rome. |
Ash318 - I hope you don't mind that I'm off your questions, but I noticed from a previous question that you stayed in 2007 at Haus Wartenberg in Salzburg. We are looking at this guesthouse for our trip in early July 2008. Could you add your comments to my question posted a couple of days ago? Thanks.

If you are going to Pisa, climb the leaning tower. You need reservations in advance and can buy them online. It's great fun.

A friend of our started the company that ownes Borgo Di Vagali. It looks beautiful and I know that all of the places are very luxurious.
In Italy they have Borgo Di Vagali by Cortona, Rigo Salcio by Lucignano and Villa Cassia near Pisa. |

___________ You can drive into Lerici, leave the car in the very large parking lot and then take the ferry in to Cinque Terre. You can park for a few days at a time and it is very safe. The ferry goes to Portevenere then you change to the 5T line. OR you could drive into Portovenere. Stay there (good hotels and good restaurants...the one under the church is extremely good). There is a regular ferry schedule from Portovenere to the 5 villages. |
Hi Ash,
Your itinerary really depends on how much of Italy you have already seen and how often you want to change hotels, and drag your luggage out of the car into the hotels (don't leave anything ever visible in the car). My reaction is to have your parents spend more time in Rome, break it up with a day train (1 1/2 hour trip) to Florence (don't drive!) and then take off from Rome to get a feel of Tuscany. If you want to walk Cinque Terre, it will take a whole day for getting there and for the walking. Take a look at ItalianNotebook.com for ideas of small towns that would be a treat to see in and around Rome and in Umbria. Forget about the Amalfi coast, that can take a whole day down and a whole day back, a lot of running around. If you want to go to an island, there is Ponza, not as swish as Capri, but a lot easier to get to. |
We've gone From Rome to Tuscany and from Rome to Positano and from Rome to Capri. The easiest drive was from Rome to Tuscany. Depending on where in you stay, it's not a long drive. We stayed outside of Greve which was a location we loved especially because it made it easy to drive into Florence a couple of times. I have a trip report under my name that has the details of that trip if it interests you at all.
That's not to say that we didn't absolutely LOVE Positano (and Capri) too. When we went from Rome to Positano we hired a driver to drive us because, quite frankly, I was nervous about my husband driving on that windy road--I thought he'd make us all sick! When we went to Capri we flew into Rome and immediately took a train to Naples, cab to the ferry, and ferry to Capri. It was a long day of driving, but SO worth it when we finally arrived in Paradise. These are all such beautiful, wonderful places, you probably can't go wrong! |
One thing to think about regarding luggage and rental cars. Rental cars in Italy are typically on the small side. Four adults and 8 bags of luggage will require a very large car which can get expensive.
Also, you'll be hard pressed to find a taxi that can handle all of you (plus your luggage). |
