I need help finding an upscale 4 star hotel
$300 or so in a convenient, quiet area for women traveling alone.

We stayed in the Hotel Mozart last fall and it was fine. Our friends had a lovely room; ours was a little small but charming. I knew nothing about location when I booked the hotel, but the location turned out to be great. I booked the hotel because it was highly recommended by some friends of ours, and we weren't disappointed. Also, we were able to get a good rate on Travelocity (or someplace like that). Albergo del Senato. I think you can get a double for that price if you are not going in the high season. It's a 3-star but only because it doesn't have its own restaurant and/or spa. You don't need the restaurant because there are dozens of restaurants within a 10-minute walk! Best location in Rome, as far as I'm concerned (overlooking the Pantheon), and the staff are wonderful.

But, she said quiet area.
That Piazza is a zoo.

True bob, I wasn't thinking about that. But I have to say that we were there over Christmas and it really wasn't bad at all. It was actually quite calm late at night and up until 10 am, when you are at your hotel. I think it depends on the time of year - probably in the warmer months it is a lot worse.

The fact that the piazza now contains a McDonald's would, for me, remove it from consideration.

I've been staying for years at the Hotel Forum.

As the name implies it is very near the Forum and the Colosseum, but on a quiet street. The rooms are simple but bright and clean. The management is friendly and helpful.

There's a WONDERFUL rooftop open air restaurant for breakfast with spectacular views. Also a rooftop bar for sunset cocktails.

There are many good restaurants in the area in all price ranges and it's walkable to every other part of Rome.

Depending on when you are going, you may be able to stay in a 5* for that price. I was able to spend 2 nights at the Hassler in November for 250 a night. I just checked their web page and found a special weekend package. The hassler was fabulous and I never could have afforded their regular rate! For 250 it was a splurge I caould afford.

Try the Hotel Borgognoni. My wife and I stayed there two years ago and just had friends stay there on our recommendation. Ask for an interior courtyard view. Location is good, staff was wonderful and I thought the rooms were very nicely sized for Europe. Here's their web site:
