Need help - Rome to Paris by train
 

Preface: This is my first trip to Italy so I am a greenhorn here.

Situation: I am leading a student trip which will end in Rome at Fiumicino airport. I am sending the students/parents back to the US and then I am going on to Paris for a few weeks. I need to burn a day before my apartment is ready in Paris, so to pass time, I was thinking of taking an overnight train from Rome.

Questions - is there a train from Fiumicino like there is from CDG? Since I will already be at the airport dropping my students, I would rather not have to go back into the city to a train station. Also, I have checked the train schedule and it shows a couple of stops lasting 2 hours. What does one do during this time? How best to book my ticket?

I'm not sure I am going to do this - just checking the details. It may make more sense to fly into Paris and just get a hotel for one night. Just looking for something different for a change.

I believe you must return to Roma Termini to connect to Paris train. The Leonardo Express train is only a30 minute nonstop ride to Termini.

The most direct night train rail service Rome-Paris would be out of Termini.

You could also get a night service as far as Lyon but that would entail a change of train at 6:30 AM or so.

You could also waste a day in Italy by going to Milan, staying overnight there and going on by daytime rail the next day...and there are variations on that theme I won't bore you with.

Budget flights to paris all seem to originate out of Rome's Ciampino airport and you can check www.skyscanner.net for the most up-to-date details and schedules.

The direct night train leaves Roma Termini at 18:40 and arrives at Paris Bercy at 09:10. Discounted fares are available if you book far enough in advance. If you book at trenitalia.com, you'll have to register first and this can be a frustrating process. If you book at sncf.com, you can choose to have your ticket mailed to an address in Rome (like your hotel).
