Hey guys,

I will traveling to Dublin this Friday 4/16 for my first trip to the country. I want to rent for a week 4/16-4/23 would you all be so kind to recommend a reliable and cost conscious car hire?

I almost booked through thrift but read the fine print which "charges" you a 2,000 Euro deductible for rental that is hidden in fine print. I want to use a car rental that does not require such a high deductible.

I plan on picking up the car anywhere in Dublin, Center city would probably be better because there is no airport fee. I am 26 and since this is my first time I am thinking about getting CDW insurrance and even getting excess as well just because this is my first time driving in Europe.

I would really appreciate all your suggestions and experiences. Love this site. Happy travels !

If you are buying the CDW AND the 'Excess', your total liability is approx 100 Euro -- the 2000 Euro 'Hold' or 'Deposit' is only applied if you DECLINE the CDW and 'Excess'.

In any event, MOST rentals EXCLUDE tire, wheel, undercarraige, side mirrors and glass damage from the CDW AND from the 'Excess' coverage.

I've noticed that a few companies are now offering that coverage as an EXTRA, EXTRA -- for 10 to 20 Euro per day!!!!!

If you ARE buying CDW, that cost is usually INCLUDED in your quote. The 'Excess' usually is NOT. It runs 10-20 euro extra -- PER DAY.

Airport fees (typically 25-30 Euro) and Road Tax (usually 2-3 Euro, PER DAY), MAY or MAY NOT be included in the quote. In the case of ALL rentals, you will be charged - at pick up -- for the Initial Tank of fuel. Whether or not returning the car with a FULL TANk nets you a REFUND of the Initial Fuel Charge is determined by the policy of each individual company .... MOST details are buried in the 'Fine Print' in their "Terms And conditions"

There are alternatives to buying the 'Excess' available from private vendors, like www.insurance4carhire.com or www.xswaiver.com but you need to check out THEIR 'Fine Print' to see if they are right -- FOR YOU.

Car rental in Ireland just gets weirder and weirder. I rented a 9 passenger van(stick) from Avis.com at Dublin Airport for July 10-24 for $1,213.97 (no CD - we have Worldcard) and mid-sized Toyota (auto) from July 1-31 at Shannon for $885.95 (no CD)from Auto Europe (also Avis but noticeably cheaper). My son got a 9 pass (auto) at Shannon (no CD) for 30 days for about $2,600. This was all done in early April. This was after much cost comparison. Prices seem to have gone up significantly since I booked, but AutoEurope and Avis (either .com or .ie) seemed to have the consistently best prices. Good luck all.
