Need help planning trip to Turkey

I'm planning a trip to Turkey. Unfortunately, I live in Edmonton, Canada so flights are horrible here. How easily (time, cost) is it to get from Frankfurt to Istanbul. Or is it better to go to Athens and then go from there.

Thanks!

Go to either JFK or Paris for direct connections via Delta or Air France

Try posting your question on the "Eastern Europe...etc" branch on Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree. (www.thorntree.lonelyplanet.com)

There are some "regulars" there with a lot of knowledge about the area: planes, trains, buses and so on.

I flew last year via Toronto and Frankfurt, on Air Canada and Lufthansa. There was a two-hour connection in Frankfurt on the way there and a seven hour wait on the way back. Two hours was plenty of time even with a terminal change and a late plane. Seven hours is a long wait but the airport has a lot of restaurants and stores. We stayed in the Lufthansa lounge since we were travelling first class (points!)

Sera - I live in toronto and fly to Turkey every year (hubby is Turkish and the in-laws still live there). We have tried a number of routes to Turkey over the last 7 yrs. The best being to go through either London or Frankfurt. From both Frankfurt and London you can get direct flights to a number of Turkish cities, including Istanbul, Bodrum and Antalya. Depending on how last minute you can be, the flights from Frankfurt can be very cheap. Try this website for chartflight (in German but use the AtlaVista Babelfish translation site below for need translation). I found flights around 399 Euros Frankfurt to Bodrum, we did this route last yr and flew Air Transit to Frankfurt.

Charter flights from Frankfurt:
http://www.mcflight.de/

AltaVista:
http://babelfish.altavista.com/translate.dyn

Also, you can search for prices right through the Frankfurt airport. They have an area in the airport for 100s of travel agents - used to post it, with tel #s, but can't find it now. Anway, here is there link to their ticket search, click on Schedule Flights or Premium Partners to search for flights:
http://www.flughafen-frankfurt.de/b2c/livecontroller/m009/m009_001.jsp

We have also gone through London and bought tickets over the internet & called for confirmation. Try these websites. I have found that flying from Frankfurt is cheaper though given the exchange rate for the pound:

http://www.airnet.co.uk/
http://www.cheaperholidays.com/
http://www.holidaywarehouse.co.uk/flightsearch.asp
http://www.holiday.co.uk/
http://www.dialaflight.com/flightsearch.asp

Also, we have done Turkish Airlines from Chicago to Istanbul. Turkish Airlines is a great airlines, excellent service, no smoking. The connecting flight from Toronto to Chicago on American was horrible - over booked, no food, but unavoidable as it was included in the price.

There is a travel agent here in Toronto which is run by people and often get some good deals. Reply if you want me to give you their name and tel.

Maybe you could go on WestJet to Toronto, or if you get a decent price from Edmonton to London or Frankfurt you can then usually get a reasonablely priced flight to the coast.

Good luck it is totally worth the trip once oyu get there!

Try Smarter Living at http://www.smarterliving.com/. Look on the left hand side and use the link marked Flight Schedule. Then put in where you want to go from and go to. It will list all the flights (nonstops first) and gives you links to all the airlines that fly the route. Good luck.
