Chefchaouen is a quiet town. If you like going to Tijuana then go for it, maybe you'll like it. You can take a taxicab from Ceuta relatively inexpensively.

StCirq: that is the perfect analogy. I did the day trip to Tangiers from Tarifa (which i loved Tarifa). Tangiers did feel like Tijuana..it was dirty and crazy, however I'm so glad i did experience it. It was completely different than any other culture i had experienced plus it was my first time on the African continent. While not the ideal location, i'm glad i went and would do it again if that was an option.
Fara_713: Enjoy Spain...it's an amazing country. Do spend more time in Seville. |
We did Spain, Portugal and Morocco 2 years ago. For the Morocco leg, we flew from madrid to Casablanca. And from there, we arranged for a private 5day tour to Fez, the Erg Chebbi dunes and Marrakech through Authentic Morocco tours. We kind of told them what we wanted to do and see and from there, they designed a package for us. I believe we covered a lot of distance and must see places doing it this way and we stayed in the most wonderful riads, brought to non touristy places and most of all was able to do the sunset camel ride in the desert in Erg Chebbi, right on the edge of the Sahara. Of all the places we went to, I would say, we liked Fez best. And we did not go to Tangiers for obvious reasons.

Easy Jet goes from Madrid to Marrakech, at least they did last year. I did a weekend trip there and it was easy. We stayed at Riad Adriana which I HIGHLY recommend. If you go to Sevilla and want real authentic local fare, go to Los Cuevas. It's on the other side of the river, and worth it. Nothing fancy, but the freshest and best food in Sevilla without a doubt. My Sevillano friends introduced me to it. Have fun!

StCirq and CathyM: thank you both for the information regarding Tangiers. We did go, and had I not read your advice, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it much. Like dmelo1, I found it to be so very different from anything I'd ever experienced (also my first time on the African continent), and I believe "fascinating" is a perfect descriptor. I never had much desire to go anywhere in Africa (not sure why), but now I would like to see more of Morocco~and more of Africa has now been added to my (lengthy) list of Places to See!
