Need HELP from my SHOPPING FRIENDS: Best place to find southern French- or southern Italian-style tablecloth/linens??
Hi Everybody,
Since I won't be able to make it to Europe in the near future, I was wondering where you might recommend that I find nice tablecloths and linens for my home. I LOVE the Provence style, as well as the Southern Italian style. I am based in NYC, but perhaps the internet would be even better to purchase these things? I have seen beautiful tablecloths from Italian designer LISA CORTI. However, I don't necessarily need a "name designer", just pretty linens that will last and bring a smile to my face every day. THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR HELP! |
I bought a tablecloth and napkins at Geneviève Lethu in Paris on our last trip. I haven't looked, but maybe they have a website?
|
Williams Sonoma actually sells some. The pattern is called Provence and comes in a few colorways. Here's a link to the blue.
http://ww1.williams-sonoma.com/cat/p...%7Crshop%2Fhme Pierre Deux has probably the largest selection. They have a catalog http://www.pierredeux.com/boutique/s...p;menuoption=0 but also a shop in Manhattan. The website says it's at 625 Madison but it seems to me I saw they had moved somewhere near Bloomingdales so check before going. There's another website I found by doing a search. It's here http://www.french-brand.com/table-linen/vent-du-sud/ |
Souleiado, probably the largest maker of Provencal-type fabrics, has a Web site in the USA:

The Pierre deux shops have the real thing there are several places you can find on google if you type in Provence.

Try this, too-- www.lespritprovence.com

Whereas Williams Sonoma has "provencal style" table linens, I think you will find few if any actually made in France.
Pierre Deux is the American "branch" of Souleiado. |
I have the Wm Sonoma that I use for outdoors, they are made in India. The Pieerre Dux ones are expensive, tho I bought them on sale. I use them for holidays or guests. I did find on line(what I should have bought in Provence)
the treated cotton ones that you can wipe clean. But My favorite on-line Provençal shop went out of business. I bought a few before, now I wish I had orderd more. |
I know, Mimi; I love those treated ones, especially for family get-togethers with toddlers (and adults--with red wine!)

The Souleiado Web site mentioned above says that they carry plasticized fabrics.
|
You are all wonderful...thank you!

if you type in provencal linens there are many more so you can compare prices.
|
Where ever you find the linens make sure they are actually made in France, I searched for some to carry in in my store and many that I found were made in India.

Hi All,
I found some great-looking French tablecloths at this website, thanks to mclaurie: www.french-brand.com/table-linen/vent-du-sud/ Thanks again to all!! |
Thanks for the feedback Betty :-d

The treated tablecloths are indeed wonderful--I'm using one for Thanksgiving. I bought it last year in Nice at a small shop opposite L'Ecurie restaurant: blue and olive green and rust--perfect for fall.

The site that McLaurie recommended is very nice--lots to choose from. Also the one from Mimi with the very appropriate name. |
Hi Betty, I am in France in one week. I certainly plan to check out the table cloths. I will tell you I bought very nice imported provence tablecloths at TJ Max for $50. They were higher in cost about a year ago but came down. THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL and I gave them as gifts. One sister saw the gift at another sister's house and asked me how much I paid where I bought blah blah blah. Then after my answer she said, yeah I saw them there too.
Just check it out might save you some space in your suit case LOL. |
Hi Sarah,
Unfortunately no TJ MAxx in Manhattan...but interestingly enough...the prices on these websites for French tablecloths are often in the $40 to $50 range. |

Hi mc!
But does this branch carry Provencal tablecloths?? |
Hi Betty:
Check out this delightful little shop in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. L'esprit de Provence sells all kinds of beautiful Provencal and Tuscan tablecloths.(and lots of other stuff from France and Italy) I just purchased a tablecloth last week and love it. They carry all sizes ,lots of colours and styles including cotton, linen, manosque, childrens , scotchgard or teflon coated acrylic coated and plastique. Their products came in solids ,toile ,multi toile, florals, ble ,sirsa ,stripes etc. They told me they ship anywhere. Their website is www.tablecloths.com Their toll free line is 888 468 1817. Good luck |
Hi Keldar,
Tried to get on tablecloths.com but the site is not working. Maybe they went out of business? |
Sorry I have not read all the names given but try quelobject.com They have lovely french linens and cloths. I love all the bright colors. I did get very lucky once at TJ Max and purchased a verly large french table cloth at a LOW price.
|
Hi Betty70, TJ Maxx is hit or miss. But it's worth checking it out. If you don't mind going to Woodbury commons, there's a store there that's right beside Crate and Barrel that sells provence style linens. They also have a Williams and Sonoma outlet store. Good luck!
|
Hi Betty:
I am sorry, the website address was incomplete. I am just checking it now and it's working fine so here it is this time the complete one. (I must not have had my glasses on :) ) www.tableclothsetc.com regards, Keldar |
Thanks for that website cigalechanta.
I had bougt the "pre-cut" round, in both the treated material for outside, and cotton for inside in Bezier, at the end of a canal du midi trip, and have wanted more ever since! |
Betty, when I was in NYC last week I stopped by the temporary shops on Bryant Park behind the ice rink. I don't recall seeing French linens but they had other items - lovely candles, bath products. The sales person told me they have a store in Soho. You might give the store a try to see if they have any linens. I cannot remember the name of the store but I think it was Ecco. If you find out, let me know. I would like to see if they have an online store because I loved the candles with berries on them. Should have bought them.
|
The cloths at Tj and Sonoma are made in India. If you google Provençal tablecloths there are many. My source here for the treated ones was French Country but are no longer in business.. For real oil cloth that I leave out in the rain, I buy at Vermont country store.(made in the USA)It comes in blue/white, red/white checks and a fruit design.

Mimi, isn't it too bad that French Country Living went out of business? I loved that catalog and the products.
|
I went to the TJ Maxx in NYC yesterday and boy -- what chaos! I do not usually have luck in these stores where you have to wade through endless piles...
Will order online instead. The prices seemed quite reasonable. Cheers! |
Just wanted to thank all my shopping friends on this thread for advice on finding Provencal tablecloths.
I ordered mine--finally--from french-brand.com and they are be-YOO-ti-ful! HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!! --Betty (NYC) |
Happy New Year Betty! Are you still thinking of moving west?
|
Hi mclaurie!
Yes, moving to Los Angeles on January 30, 2006 due to acting career. Moving farther away from France and Italy (sniff, sniff)...but definitely hope to visit there when we get a chance. Have relatives in Italy. Cheers! |
There is a catalogue called Sur La Table that use to have those tablecloths. I actually bought the ones at TJ MAXX and mine were made in France! If you have a Marshalls or HomeStore, give them a try.
