Need help for walking on the way up/down from Jungfraujoch
 

Hi,
We are planning to go to Jungfraujoch as one day trip and want to stop at the small village on the way down. Any recommend easy walking trail (flat or not too steep) on the way with nice scenery 40 mins max? We would love to see flowers, villages and mountains. My husband can't walk more than 1 hr because of knee surgery.

Our original plan we want to walk from Murren to Gimmelwald, but unfortunate we don't have time and it is not on the way from Jungfrajoch. Many people told us it is might too tight schedule if we go to Jungfraujoch and go to Murren. We need to catch the train at Interlaken Ost around 6 PM.

Any suggestion is highly appreciated.

You could take the train down from the Jungfraujoch and change at Kleine Scheidegg for a train to Lauterbrunnen. From the train station at Lauterbrunnen you can get the cablecar up to the top where you again change for the short train ride to Murren.

From where are you leaving for your ascent to the Jungfrau? If you are coming from Interlaken Ost you can get a train to Lauterbrunnen and go up that way OR take the train to Grindelwald and change there for the train up to the Jungfrau.

In terms of doing ANY walking you are going to need to do the ascent early in the morning so you can reach the top as soon as possible.

Yes get off at Kleine Schiedeg on way back down from Jungfraujoch and then take the most popular trail in the Jungfrau Region and an easy flat one - the Kl Schiedegg to Mannlichen stroll - should not take more than an hour and is fairly flat - baby strollers are even seen on it - then at Mannlichen take gondolas down to eiyther Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald - Mannlichen is a celebrated viewpoint as you can see both the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys and eagle-eyed over Interlaken, wedged between the two lakes that bookend it - so this 'ridge walk' is perhaps just what you want.

From Mannlichen, the gondolas go to Wengen, no?

Yes they go to Wengen, my mistake but to go to Lauterbrunnen you go first to Wengen then take a train to Lauterbrunnen. Thanks for correcting my mistake.

Not sure there is much en route - but here is something on this most popular stroll in the Jungfrau Region.

There's nothing between LS and Mannlichen -- you are in the mountains. It's 3 flat miles -- 75 minutes. There are a few benches along the way if you want to rest. Refreshments at KS or Mannlichen or Wengen but not between.

We did it from Mannlichen to KS (which is preferred but okay the other way). Scroll down 1/3 the way to Day 3:

It is preferred to walk down from Mannlichen - slightly downhill but more importantly going that way you have the Jungfrau Massif in all its glory in front of you not at your back - but even the other way is thrilling, being able to see both valleys from this ridge walk.

The Kleine Scheidegg to Mannlichen walk is easy. I have only done it in reverse, but not a problem. It is HOT here in Wengen right now. About 90 degrees. Don't know when your trip is planed, but if it is soon, be fore-warned of the heat.

Holy heatwave Batman! Weather channel says high of 75 in Lauterbrunnen yet in the 90's in Wengen, Grindelwald, Lucern, Meiringen etc. Reporting error or is Lauterbrunnen always that much cooler?

No, it is not cooler in Lauterbrunnen! It has been HOT every place I have gone in the BO! Leaving today for Nice. It is cooler than here.

mid-Sep you better hope that it is not freezing at places like Wengen or Murren - there was ice on the sidewalks one mid-September when I went to those two places - rare to be hot at anytime of year and no chance of being really hot in September.

PalenQ I don't know what you call hot, I'm usually in Interlaken and surroundings in late August early September and it has been in the mid to low 70s F. I can honestly say I have never seen ice on the sidewalks.

We will be there Mid August. Hopefully it is not too hot and no rain.

tipsy= I often go to Interlaken in September and yes down at that elevation never seen ice but on two occasions I have a places like Murren - in mid-September there was ice on the walks - perhaps very unusual and another time around Sep 10 I wanted to take the 3 Passes bus tour and it was cancelled due to snow blocking the tracks - again unusual and in September you should be fine though I suspect places like Gimmelwald or Murren or Wengen may be tad chilly at night.
