I know that everyone is different but geez-you guys make your mothers at 60 sound like they are old and infirmed. I need two knee replacements and at age 57 fly across the Atlantic everyweek to various countries for work so don't count us "old broads' out yet. I will get off my soapbox now....

I'm not that far behind you, Dutyfree, but I don't take offense because I think the posters have been good at telling the age of their mothers (61, 70+, 80) when they took their trips and what their experiences were. Physical condition is more important than age, of course. We took my 20+ nephew and his girlfriend with us on a trip last year and she had to rest some afternoons while we were out and about. I remember by 20+ niece pleading to take taxis at times, such as when I would say, "it's only a mile or two back to the hotel" in Rome or "we can wheel our bags to the train station" in Boston.

travel_italy said her mother "is looking for a relaxing trip, while still seeing the major sites. She doesn't want to run around the whole trip! looking for really good food and breathtaking experiences. We have thought about spending some down time--just to even out the sightseeing."

That says to me--slow pace, some sightseeing, leisurely meals, riding to a scenic spot to sit and enjoy the view and the people--more passive experiences--rather than packed days with lots of sights, walking, and active experiences.

Travel_italy..How much do you feel responsible for making your Mother's dream come true? Is your sister going to blame you for any glitches? If so, I would suggest (again I am the heretic) looking at Insight,Globus and Trafalger Tours (in that order with Insight being my preference by a hair)and see if there is something that suits your mother. There are several tours which are basically Rome Venice and Florence. It would be a nice no hassle trip if you select well. A tour is not a bad way to go with multiple family members who have very limited time and want a quick view of the "highlights". Read the descriptions well- figure out where you are staying on regards to the city core, what is included and what is extra, and what you stop and see (you will see may mean the bus goes by).
