Need Help: Discount Flight from FRA to FCO

Hi Everyone,

As many of you may know from my other posts, DH and I are taking our families on a 10 day trip to Germany and Austria this summer. As we've both recently been awarded a bit of extra vacation time (yea!!!), we are going to spend a week in southern Italy after the family trip. Even better, the trip will coincide with our 3rd wedding anniversary

The difficulty is that we need to get from FRA to either FCO (Rome) or NAP (Naples) on Wednesday, June 6th. The earliest flight we can make would be 11am because we are staying in Wurzburg the night before and we'd like to make sure our parents make their 11am flights with no problems before we jet off on our getaway. I've searched www.whichbudget.com and ITA and thus far, the most inexpensive flight I can find is BA and it is about $150 per person. It's not a horrible price or anything, but I had been under the impression discount airlines offered flights for far less.
Any suggestions?
Many Thanks!

Adding to my original question,

I found that if I purchase a roundtrip Lufthansa ticket, it drops the price to only $99.80 per person. Would not showing up for the return trip cause any problems? Our return flight back to the US is on AA.

Focusing on _one_ intra-Europe transportation segment like this can miss the bigger picture: what is the _total_ intra-Europe tranportation budget, and how do different modalities affect each other?

The $150 fare may be money well-spent, or it may be a "symptom" of an itinerary that could have its total tansportation budget better controlled by looking at the big picture.

More info on the whole itinerary might yield better answers.

Best wishes,

Rex

Regarding your supplemental info/question... no, I don't think you will have a problem using only the outbound portion of a roundtrip ticket. Some will argue that ethically, you should actually telephone LH 24 hours before the return flight (that you intend to skip), and tell them that you will be unable to fly, and wish to cancel.

Hi rex,

You are definitely on point in that we do not have the most efficient trip in mind. That said, we have an overriding limiting factor in that our parents (not well traveled) are joining us with the understanding that we will be acting as guide and escort so we are committed (inefficient or not) to taking them to FRA on June 6th for their 11am flight. DH and I could definitely transfer to the other FRA airport and I'd consider routing through other cities, but one way or another we need to get from Frankfurt to Italy on or around the 6th.

P.S. Good point about calling 24 hours in advance and canceling the portion of the ticket we will not use. I've done this before with Southwest Airlines in the US and it worked quite well.

Hi hazel,

I've already scoured whichbudget.com but thank you for the suggestion.

I would have been satisfied with the BA $150 and feel even better about the $99 roundtrip Lufthansa fare. It may not be the best deal out there but with all the other variables on this trip that I am trying to plan around (planning for 7 people is much harder than for 2!), it seems like a good enough bargain to me.

Gotta agree with you on that one. Eventually you have to reach the "good enough" stage so you can move onto other issues. Good luck with the rest of your planning!

My main reason for wanting to know the "big picture" of your itinerary was to know if you are making optimal use of car rental, especially the possibility of a rental that begins and ends in Austria. Your $99 LH fare may make it pointless to continue to micro-analyze this further.
