Need general tips for Ireland in May and renting a car

I probably will get the insurance as you suggest but may I ask why is it necessary? I never get it when I rent here in the States and have never needed it. also, how much is gas in Ireland?

I suggest it for several reasons (and I usually pass on it in the U.S. too):
Travel on the left is a major change.
Rural routes can be confusing, so navigating paired with (see above) compounds the challenges.
Once you get off the major roads, they can be very narrow - and the toll in outside mirrors is obvious since they are simple picked up and placed on the rock wall that claimed them, sort of like trophies.
Parallel parking on the 'wrong' side of a narrow street from the 'wrong' side of the car = high potential for paint scratches.
Seriously, driving in Ireland is totally not something you should be worried about, but it's one of about three places where I kick in for the extra insurance.
My math shows gas is running about $7.58 per gallon this week.

I don't get it either in the states as my own car insurance covers that. Not the same for Europe - and my AmX doesn't cover Ireland or Italy. You can check with your own insurance and your own credit card.

Get the insurance. In the US and lots of other countries your credit card account includes rental car insurance. But they won't take care of it everywhere. Visa, for example, explicitly says, "No benefit is provided for motor vehicles rented in Israel, Jamaica, the Republic of Ireland, or Northern Ireland." Some, but not all, World Mastercards provide car rental insurance in Ireland. If you have a World Mastercard, you would have to call your provider to see if you are covered and have them send you the documentation you need to show the rental car company to prove that you have coverage.
