Need B&B in Venice central San Marco $150-200 range Please recommend

I've killed the better part of the day looking for a central B&B or small hotel in Venice- Hard to tell if charming and shabby from website.

Looks like have to spend between $150 and $200 a night to get a room close to San Marco with some 'charm' - but I hate to just pick one from travel site (There are as many bad comments as good about each one.)

Please recommend!!!!

We stayed here in 2007. I didn't fill out the form to check the current rate. We paid 150 euros a night then so it likely is more. But just wanted to throw it into the mix for you. It was part of a pensione but in a separate location. Only three rooms and then a living room and breakfast room. We were overlooking a small side canal and we liked it a lot!

Palazzo Guardi might fill the bill. It is on the other side of the canal from San Marco but just about 100 yards from the Galleria Accademia, but there is a vaporetto very near by. That makes it one stop to San Marco, or just walk over the bridge, follow the signs and you will be there in about 10 minutes. Like so many hotels in Venice, it is a bit off-putting on the outside - think old as it should be, but the rooms are very, very nice. Here is a link: www.palazzoguardivenice.com

Rooms 4 and 5 are the best - large with lovely views over a canal with an old church and plaza. The photos in the link are accurate - no exagerations or trick photography. I hope this helps and have a great time.

BTW, If you care to, click on my name and my TR has a detailed description. We stayed in room 4. If you go to the website, the 3rd picture in the photos section is the view from our window. Some of the rooms do not have windows and they cost less so if you like the place, be sure to check when you make your reservaton.

We stayed in a b&B called Ca San Trovaso. It is in Dorsoduro, near Accadamia. $110 Euro\night. Nothing fancy but cheap, clean, and good location. Owner was very helpful, but sometimes hard to find. Check it out on Venere

Another recommendation for Palazzo Duodo. I stayed there in 2003 and loved it with the air of faded grandeur and sense of what it might have been like to live in a Venetian palace a while ago. The breakfast was good and the location superb.

URBANTALK1,

Try www.venere.com. Click on Venic on the map; select San Marco; toggle between inns and B&Bs.

There are over 40 inns and B&Bs listed in San Marco. Every listing will have a description of the place, reviews from folks who stay there and a map showing location.

If you see something you like, check directly with the hotel to see if they can beat the price.

When I was looking for a place in Venice I had many discussions with the owner of this b+b and she was wonderful. We didn't end up choosing it only because we are travelling in August and wanted to stay somewhere away from San Marco. It gets great reviews.

Venice is very compact, so there's really no reason to limit yourself to San Marco, and in fact, you might really want to stay somewhere away from the throngs.

Does it have to be a B+B?

Locanda Orseolo

In 2007 we stayed at Corte Compana, just off San Marcos. Excellent host, beautiful rooms. Great reviews on tripadvisor.com.

You don;t say when you are going - or if you will need AC. Many B&Bs simply don;t have any - so if that is something you need (and IMHO Venice is the summer without AC is close to madness) definitely check.

Can it be an apartment?
We are staying in an apartment in Dorsoduro.

I really enjoyed Hotel San Gallo. It is pretty much a stones throw from Piazza San Marco, and had a very quaint b&b feel to it. Definitely recommended!
