Need Advise Pousada Viano do Castelo
 

We're leaving shortly to Portugal and just found out that they have availability for a twin standard (wanted deluxe) at the Pousada Santa Lucia in Viana do Castelo. We made a reservation at the Melo Alvim house in town, since the Pousada had no rooms. Has anyone stayed in a standard room at the Pousada? I would hate to give up our reservations at the Melo Alvim house if they are small. Thanks in advance.

I do not know your hotel in town, but the view from the hill above town is to die for. I would stay at the Pousada in a broom closet. I have never had a bad room in a Pousada, and the breakfasts are the best.

Thanks Bob, that's what I was hoping to hear. They have us on a waiting list for a deluxe room or suite with a sea view. Keep your fingers crossed for us. I liked the broom closet line! By the way, you're the one who helped me with our itinerary. I'll let you know how we made out. Can't wait.

I had lunch at that Pousada in June and it is MAGNIFICENT!
If the rooms are anything like the lobby and dining areas (by looks of their brochure they are) you are in for a TREAT!

Ditto, ditto, ditto!
The Pousada is a very classy place (having a slightly formal Art Deco air) with a highly enviable location. Several years ago it even made the Conde Nast Traveler last page "Room with a View", plus there's the serenity, the gardens and the pool.
Any room will be fine; as bob says, because it's a finely tuned engine-a very well run place. And as Queenie and bob have told you, be prepared for a feast in the dining room. The best grilled prango I've ever had, fabulous caldo verde, wonderful artisanal cheeses, that yummy Portuguese bread and a lavish dessert buffet.
On our last visit, the funicular down to the city, which departs below the Pousada, at the Igreja de Santa Luzia (church) level, wasn't working, and they didn't know when it would be back in service. I wonder if it every got repaired.
The city itself is absolutely Old World charming with oodles of atmosphere and nice shopping for handicrafts such as ceramics and beautiful lace. And a charming market on Fridays.
Have a great time, and go for the twin at the Pousada!
