<<sunny rooms with a view and balcony>>
Huh?
Talk in terms of what you'll spend, not star ratings (which are often tied to amenities, not quality). And what do you want to see from your balcony? If you want to have a view of the Castle or the Royal Mile, say that. If you want to stay outside the center of the city and see the firth, say that.
And if you want to guarantee sunny, go to New Mexico. Scotland is wet. It could rain the whole time you're in Edinburgh and any money you spend on a balcony and a "sunny" room would be a waste.
If you're looking for July 2012, good luck. The end of July is right when Edinburgh is preparing for the height of festival season (Art, Fringe, International, Military Tattoo are all in August) and July 20-29 is the Edinburgh Jazz Festival.

If you succeed in finding the sun in Edinburgh - more power to you.'
I love the city - and to me the mist and drizzle are part of the charm (although the 45 degree, pouring rain and heavy wind one day in late July was a little much). this is my experience from 3 visits over several years - all in the summer. I'm sure there are some days when it's sunny - I've just never seen one.

Go to www.venere.com and look at what's available.
Read the reviews for each hotel and the map for the location.

Welcome to Scotland!
The only places I have used that have balconies are the George and the Glasshouse. Googling tells me you'll find them at the Holyrood, and the Apex in the Grassmarket, Ten Hill Place and Frederick House.
Given that you are relatively upmarket, you may just get under the wire on room booking, but I do strongly advise you to book now.
Lots of hotels have good views. Balconies are not a big thing here, since the weather (as has been indicated) is pretty unreliable.
Please let us know if we can help further.

""I'm sure there are some days when it's sunny - I've just never seen one."
yes, there are - can be downright hot sometimes. But more often - not."
It's also not a particularly wet city, getting just about about 60% of the rainfall as New York City for example.

<i>getting just about about 60% of the rainfall as New York City for example.</i>
But NY has seasons, Edinburgh has random weather events - so even though the total rainfall is lower the number of days on which rain falls is higher.

"I am aware of the rains and lack of sunlight and the festivals" ...hence my question to the experienced.. Its difficult to judge from internet pictures if a Hotel has larger windows or a balcony for the claustrophobic.
Thanks

janisj ....My priority is to find a hotel that meets most of my requirements before I make a budget. 4-5 star hotel rooms are priced in different ranges depending on the city . The George or Glasshouse are looking good to me . Do you have more suggestions for me?
