Need advice on the Tuscany region of Italy

We are traveling with another couple to Italy in October and we're trying to get our itinerary planned out. We will fly in and out of Rome, and plan to rent a villa in the Tuscany region for a week, rent a car and make day excursions throughout the area. Would appreciate suggestions of some central areas that would be relaxing to stay, and your ideas of must see sights. Has anyone done a hot air balloon ride over Chianti or horseback riding in the area? Thanks for your help!

We stayed at an apartment in a villa 15km south of Florence called Podere Toricella - great for excursions to Chianti, Siena, San G., Volterra, Pisa and of course Florence. Had a great restaurant on site too. Rented it on tuscany.net site and paid less by booking directly with the owner.

Sooner or later this thread and the "Toscana suggestions" topped by Dean will get separated (in fact, my reply here will do it right now).

It will help to have the URL of Dean's thread when that happens:

http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1325569

Best wishes,

Rex
