Greg,

We are also going to be in the area 29 Sep - 02 Oct. We are arriving in Cannes by train from Italy (after doing the Cinque Terra). We are renting a car in Cannes and wanted to visit St-Tropez. Still reading the travel guides so see what we can fit in during that time frame. Is it too cold to do the beach thing during that time? All these questions.... hahaha

I sent an email to La Tartane Hotel in St-Tropez. We'll see how they respond.

Be sure to try to see some of the sailboat races--they are the reason why you're having a hard time finding a room. It's a huge regatta called Le Nioulargue. Hundreds of sailboats converge on St. Tropez--including ultramodern ocean racing yachts and wooden sailboats dating to the 1910s to the 1930s. There are several daily races around the bay--the old yachts and the newer yachts take turns--and the harbor is full and busy all day long.

You can watch the races from land or go out on an excursion boat for a few hours and see the boats up close. Magnificent either way.

It was the highlight of our Riviera trip--really, really magical.
