Need advice on renting a villa in the Lakes Region
Hi:
I'm interested in renting a villa in the Lakes region in August. There will be 6 of us: my husband and I, our girls who will be 13 and 16 then, and my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, so we'd need 3 bedrooms. I've had a lot of trouble finding many places on the Web -- there seem to be a huge number of rentals in Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast, but little in the Lakes. Does anyone have any ideas? We are open as to which lake we should stay at. Thanks in advance!

Carol, August will be tough for a place to handle 6 people. I know a few places to consider but it will depend on your price range and whether you will have a car--I assume you will. I would suggest the Lago Orta/Maggiore area for your base location. Let me know if you want me to do some digging for you. Also, are you assuming a self-catering place?

Hi Bob:
Hmmm...so is having 6 the difficulty? Or is it just busy in August and people use their own places and don't rent them? Yes, we will have 2 cars, actually. My in-laws be driving over from Britain. We were assuming self-catering too. Would you recommend 2 smaller places, near each other (e.g. my family of 4 separate from my sister and brother in law?) Or should we just do a hotel? We were thinking a villa/cottage/etc. would be more spacious and possibly cheaper in the long run. I was assuming we'd have to pay at least $3000 to $4000 for a week. Is that realistic?
Thanks!

Carol, August is vacation time for the locals and there are few rentals in the Lakes area that will handle 6. I did find 2 possibilities at Lake Orta. One
is a large villa with seperate apts. that will handle various numbers, and the other is 2 flats that are adjacent
Let me know directly if you want more info on these. The prices look right.
The other villas I found required a 2 week rental during season and cost about
$7000/week.

Hi Bob:
Thanks so much, yes I would be interested in hearing about them. I've also found a few yesterday on Lake Maggiore that have availability. However, they seem to be listed by (at least) 2 different places -- 1 is a website of the owners (I've been emailing them) and another is "Doorways", a firm in Phila. I think the Doorways prices are higher -- is this a commission? Do you know if there is good coordination between the rental agents and the owners? (wouldn't want to think I'd rented only to find I hadn't!). These places are in the $1700-$3000 range for 1 week (owner prices), is that what you'd expect?
Thanks!

Carol,
I suggest you check the website www.rentvillas.com: they are Italy property rental specialists and have several properties in the lakes region.

Carol, Check out this site. I know this
area well and love it. The price for 6
is about $1200 for a week.
www.orta.net/lacasasullago
Look at the entire site while there. These people have several properties on
Lago Orta including flats and a small
hotel. Tell her I sent you--she knows me

Hi Italophile and Bob:
Thanks to both of you. Italophile, I did check the site and they don't have anything in Lombardy or Piedmont, but it was useful for the Amalfi area, where we plan to go before the lakes.
Bob, thanks, I'll check out the site now. Also, this owners group (http://lacasanet.homestead.com) looks promising too, several villas on L. Maggiore, and some on Como, but I think not as nice or well situated.
One other question: how long does it take to drive from the Amalfi area to the Lakes (Orta or Maggiore)? Would you recommend stopping overnight somewhere, or just going? We don't mind long drive trips at all.
Thanks!

Wow---that is a long way--about 10 hours
without stops. I suggest you stop on the
coast south of Genoa---perhaps Santa Margherita, and break it up--six hours
one day and 4 the next. I would try to avoid Milan enroute--horrible traffic.
The Lucca/ Pisa area is another option.

Hi Bob:
Thanks, I have changed my mind and we will definitely stop somewhere, and both your suggestions sound great so I'll start researching. Actually, we're driving from Massachusetts to DC this weekend which is 9 hours +, so you see what I mean, we're used to it. But stopping somewhere will be better. We'd actually planned to avoid Milan, have not heard great things about it.
Thanks,
Carol

Villas on Italian lakes: check the website of the German-based company www.domizile.net, they have a few beautiful properties on the lakes--not cheap, though. They also have a website in German with more property information: www.domizile.de. They have an excellent reputation and speak English.
