Now that we aren't doing as much city-hopping, I was planning on checking a couple of bags. Still don't want to take a lot.

I know that the UK has the 1-bag rule, but when I went thru Europe (granted it was Germany) in the summer, we all had 2 bags. I know I can get TO Italy with 2 bags....is Alitalia doing the 1-bag thing?

Don't have any problems limiting the liquids...except when my younger son forgets and brings mouthwash, hand sanitizer, cologne, and hair gel along! I had to do major negotiating in Turkey last year to let him at least keep some of it!!

Check the Alitalia website for their latest luggage rules, and check again just before you go.
Sometimes the baggage rules on international flights differ from the rules on
domestic (within Italy) flights.

rules from the US differ on number of carry-ons and weight limits :-) (thank goodness!!) you are (although check with your airline) allowed two carry-ons as usual...and they are the "normal" size...not just hand-bags ;-)the only problem would be if youo are not checked through...i.e. make a reservation to sosmewhere in Wurope and then book another airline connect.

I'll need to check with our local airline too - the one we'll use to get to Milan. There used to be no problems with number of carryons, liquids, etc....until they started trying to be "like" the US and European airlines! Then they started enforcing every rule imaginable. Then they only enforced the rules if you were going to certain destinations. THEN - they STOPPED enforcing the rules altogether and it was back to "anything goes!" Of course, even checking on their policy beforehand doesn't mean it won't change at the airport!

I also have a great kilm bag that I got in Istanbul a few years ago. It looks like a big handbag.....but it can hold almost as much as my carryon!

Another question on trains to Pompeii.....it's such a short time (90 minutes or so) from Rome to Naples. Is there any advantage to getting 1st class tickets? Is there food (well, coffee!) available on those trains, or does it depend on which train you get?

It wasn't the airlines (Alitalia and jet2) who were enforcing the 1 carry-on rule during my hol this summer, it was security at the airports we were flying from (Naples & Pisa). Try checking the airport websites for up to date info.
