Need advice on day trip to Cotswold from London
 

We are going to be London for 6 nights, 5 full days in October. I would like to take a day trip to the Cotswolds (we have done a bus day trip before). S.O. doesn't want to trip again in England, even though he has before. Thinking of taking the train from Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh and then on the way back stop in Oxford for a couple of hours (getting a open ended ticket). There is a small bus tour that does a similar tour from London (English Bus) but I was thinking we would have more time on our own. What do you think. I also would like to see Sudeley Castle. Is there a way to get to the castle when we are in Moreton-in-Marsch? Or is that too much in one day.

Your thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Not really -- or not easily. Multiple/infrequent bus rides.

By <i>any</i> chance did you mean he doesn't want to <u>drive</u> in England even though . . .?

Don't bother with Sudeley Castle It isn't worth the effort. We visited last year and were terribly disappointed by it. It is expensive for what there is to see. It is very much trading on its links with Richard III and Katherine Parr, last queen of Henry VIII. Their web site is gushing but we found the reality didn't live up to it. It is more an exhibition about Katherine Parr in particular (plus a few wax works) than a stately home. The rooms you do see aren't exactly memorable either. Katherine is buried in the chapel, but her tomb was destroyed in the Civil War and the present tomb dates from the C19th. The modern tableau in the church of Katherine Parr lying in state looks and feels tacky.

London Walks has two daytrips to the Cotswolds in October - "the Cotswolds in Autumn” on the 3rd and 24th and "Oxford and the Cotswolds” on the 7th and 14th.

I have to agree with ESW about Sudeley Castle.

If London Walks works w/ your itinerary -- that is the very easiest/best way to do a day trip. Unfortunately they offer the two tours on limited dates.

Think we will go on our own instead of with a group. Thanks for the info.
