Need Advice on car rental in Northern Italy

Hi everyone,

Here is our story. We will be leaving Milan on June 21 and plan to arrive in Venice on June 25. This means we will have 4 nights which we will spend in Sirmione on the southern end of Lake Garda.

We plan to enjoy the lake as well as day trips to Verona, the northern end of the lake, and not sure where else. There will be four of us traveling, 2 adults, 2 boys ages 12 and 15.

My questions are:

Should we rent a car for this portion of the trip or use train/bus? We have driven in Italy before, but are a little concerned about getting out of Milan and into Venice.

If we rent a car, I assume we should pick up the car at Milano Centrale train station? Where would you recommend we return the car....Venice? or return to Verona and train into Venice? Just not sure on the logistics.

Thanks for any and all input, advice or observations!

Hi f,

If you will have a car, I suggest returning it in Venice at the Piazzale Roma.

Great, thanks. Is Piazzale Roma easy to find? Once there, can one catch a private water taxi or vaporetto directly?

I think I am leaning towards having a car for those days, but not sure. Anyone have any experience with or without a car at Lake Garda?

Piazzale Roma is hard to miss when you are coming into Venice. All forms of water transportation are available within 200 meters.

If you already have reservations for Sirmione, you'd better check where your hotel is. The further toward the tip of the peninsula you go, the harder it will be to park. If you are inside the wallled part of the town, you might not be able to take you car to your hotel. You might consider Desenzano, Bardolino or Torri del Benaco instead with a car.

Thanks for the input. We do have reservations in Sirmione (although they could be changed). The hotel is within the walls but has free private parking.

We will not have a ton of luggage - everyone carries their own . I want to feel free to explore around the lake and Verona, but if bus and train are truly quick and easy, that would be fine. Otherwise, with 4 people, are we just better off having a car?
