Glasgow is a great destination for any visitor to Scotland, imo. Here's a recent thread about visiting the city:

But, given you parameters ChristineAnn, I'd say visit Edinburgh briefly and make the most of your time to explore one or two areas in the West - you could get a nice taste of the Highlands and Islands.

laverendrye,

I'm probably being over-sensitive about it but to be honest it does irritate me slightly when I hear people slighting the Gorbals these days.

I'm not necessarily advocating it as a must see on the city's tourist trail (although Caroline is absolutely right to laud the Citizens) but by the same token I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from going there - there's absolutely no reason to avoid it "at all costs."

I know better than most that its past reputation as one of the worst slum areas in Europe was well deserved (I spent a fair amount of time there as a child as my aunt lived there) but this link shows that the area is now home to some really innovative & exciting residential design;

BBC's doing a programme on it this week- Alcatraz, Barlinne and Carstairs. Sorry, Jim, but it's bit to go till it gets over this.
