Schuler's Switzerland:

I'll be crossing Switzerland next week and my main question is whether or not the Grand St. Bernard pass will be open (not the tunnel) -- in view of the current foul weather and snow above 2000 meters.

I am always in need of a Swiss fix.

Loved it! I would go to Switzerland every year if I could.

I ran into a couple from Switzerland at the Grand Canyon and told them I had just been to the Gimmelwald area (BO) the previous month. They said they had never been there!

We spent two great weeks taking day trips out of Kandersteg last year.

One of the highlights was a day trip to Beatenberg to enjoy a jodler konzert. What beautiful music.

The other was to Tagerwilen to the church where my grandparents (Siegrist/Thaler) were married in 1889. We were met there by the church president and the historian, and the two of them provided us with a tour of the church, its history, a copy of the wedding registration page, and a copy of my grandparents civil weddding certificate.

The certificate also provided me with my maternal great grandparents names. (Thaler/Khune) Hopefully we can get back in 2010 and spend time in St Galen to learn about that half of the family.

Kerouc: The pass should be open. Here's a website with current info regarding pass openings (in German). Unfortunately, last minute pass closings due to summer snowfall are not included in this list.

Connie: Most Swiss don't know where Gimmelwald is. Rick Steves (unknown in Switzerland) made that little village popular.
