Need a Luxury Hotel & not-to-miss spots in Venice in October

Any suggestions for a luxury/romantic hotel in Venice for a trip in October?
Any suggestions for travel agents/other sites for Venice?
I have always relied heavily on "friends" of Fodors talk forums to guide me in the right direction. This will be a special occasion and want it to be memorable. Thanks, Fellow Travelers!

If you want something special, why not try the Danieli. It is perhaps the most famous and historic hotel in Venice and pretty close to St. Marks Square. The Gritti Palace is also famous and famously expensive.

The Gritti Palace is rather tired in decor and maintenance. The staff is not friendly or helpful. The Danieli, while central, can be busy and noisy, being right in the middle of things and virtually next to a vaporetto stop. Not all rooms there are special either, only the ones in the old section are sumptuously romantic. If you are willing to pay over 1000 Euro a night, there is the Cipriani. For slightly less, I'd go with the Bauer or the Regina.

Better yet save your Euros and stay at a decent three star like the Best Western Hotel Ala, right on the same square as the Gritti Palace for a fraction of the cost. Take the saved money and use it for wonderful meals and romantic pursuits like a gondola ride (if you are so inclined).

Have fun
