Need a good itinerary....
Please Help!!! My wife and I have booked our trip to Ireland for this summer. Leaving out 7/19 (arrive 7/20) and heading back home on the 26th. We're flying to Shannon with the first night at Asheford Castle. B&B's the rest of the time.

We want to horseback ride, see old castles, Cliffs of Moer, Waterford Crystal Factory, Bunratty Castle Banquet, maybe some hiking, and of course, Dublin (my favorite). Can someone help me put something together? My email address is [email protected]

Thanks!!

First off - you will get more hits on your request if you put Ireland - July03 or something like it in the title.
. Next - July is a very busy time there, so any place you decide to go that is especially popular you should get advance reservations. Can you fly into Shannon & out of Dublin? would make your itinerary easier. Crossing the country twice (to and from Dublin) in 6 days is a lot of driving. It takes a lot longer to drive ANYWHERE there than you probably expect. Ave is 35 - 40 mph - not counting sheep, tractors and buses in your way. That said - 7/20 Arrive - go to Ashford Castle - if weather permits- stop at Cliffs on the way there. 7/21 & 22 Dublin area - Powerscourt? Glendalough for hiking 7/23 - if you do Glendalough on your way out of Dublin, you could continue on to Waterford - but this will be a pretty long day of driving. I wouldn't stay in Waterford though. I would stay in Cashel ( Dualla house :) or Cahir. 7/24 - stay same place - explore Cahir castle/ Jerpoint Abbey / etc. 7/25 Stay in Bunratty for your last night - do the Banquet . 7/26 - fly home fyi - The Banquets fill up early , so make your reservations right away. Any nights you are spending in Dublin - Book ahead. Remember - it stays light out very late in summer, but B&B owners still prefer you to check in by 6 pm or so. Oh. and double check the "last admit" or "last tour" times for everything. It really su**s to get to a castle after they lock the doors. |
Geez.
what happened? I typed up my whole reply with plenty of blank lines and spacing and it is all gone! ick. must have something to do with the new PREVIEW & EDIT buttons. |
If you want to horseback ride, I would suggest you look for farmhouse B&B's to stay in. They have their own separate farmhouse B&B book. YOu can get one from the Irish Tourist Bureau. We stayed at one in Killarney that offered horseback riding right on the premises.
If you are going to the Waterford Factory to see how the crystal is made, it is interesting. If you are looking for deals, you won't find any. We thought we could do better in the States. You only have 6 full days, and the 6th will probably be travel back to Shannon plus Banquet & Castle. I would do the Cliffs, 2 days in Dingle, 1 in Killarney, 2 in Kinsale, and head back to Shannon for the Banquet and Bunratty Castle. I hope that gives you someplace to start. Don't forget, driving from place to place takes quite a bit of time. They don't have the interstates we have. Good Luck |
That's a pretty tall order: Bunratty is right there near Shannon; the Waterford Crystal factory is in Cork; the Cliffs of Moher are in west Clare. There's a Farmhouse-type B&B (horseback riding) near Abbeyfeale (on the Kerry-Limerick border. You could conceivably stop there and take the Tarbert-Killimer ferry across to County Clare. That's about all I have to contribute.
