If you do fly into Venice, budget for a water taxi from the airport .
It's expensive but worth it! Train from Venice to Rome is easy.

A fun read set in Venice is Donna Leon's mystery series. First one is
Death at La Fenice. (Don't know if the opera is scheduled in May.. but
Fenice and it's history is fascinating.)

yes, Donna Leon for Venice, and Michael Dibdin's Aurelio Zen for Rome.

<But it seems to be affecting prices not doing roundtrip, but maybe I am doing it wrong?>

But it IS a round-trip, just in and out of different cities (maybe you already figured this out).

And Zen is good for Venice, too -

true, Grandma.

I have a soft spot for Zen - not least because they filmed the TV series with the lovely Rufus Sewell in and around the streets where our second Rome apartment was.

Thanks again everyone. You are all awesome. Flying into Venice and out of Rome gives us much better flexibility and we can even fly out of Baltimore! Thank you maxima!

Now it's time to figure out the itinerary!
