Neckar Valley - more suggestions please

Some time ago I posted for some suggestions for the Neckar Valley area and we made up our minds to stay in Bad Rappenau after getting some great ideas from BTilke. But I just received a copy of Fodor's See It Germany and it has a Neckar Valley and Bergstrasse Circular Drive that we would now like to do.
The basic circle we might take is Bensheim, Michelstadt, Amorbach, Mudau, Mosbach, Eberbach and Neckarsteinach etc.

Day one we will be driving from Bullay on the Mosel possibly with a stop in Worms then to Bensheim which is the town we have chosen to start with. My idea is to stay in the Michelstadt area for two nights using the second day to complete the drive. From there we will be heading to Rothenburg via Schwäbisch Hall, Nördlingen etc.

I would like to know if anyone has any brilliant ideas for a nice little town/village in the Michelstadt area for our stay. I have looked on the website and there are lots of possibilities but just don't know what to choose. I have also been looking at Beerfelden. I would appreciate any suggestions otherwise I will throw a dart and see where it lands!

Many thanks.

The towns that impressed me the most in this region were Michelstadt, Miltenberg, and Bad Wimpfen. Can't give you any rec's for inns... We stayed in a family room at the tidy and modern Mosbach hostel in Neckarelz - it's on the river there at the site of an old mill. Very scenic and also very unlikely that you're looking for a hostel experience, I'd guess.

Hi Russ,
We thought that Mosbach might be just a bit too far to do in the first day as I am sure we will be having plenty of scenery stops. The Hostel did look nice but we would rather an inn or guest house. I will look at Miltenberg though, would that be a smaller town than Michelstadt?

Michelstadt might be larger than Miltenberg overall. But M'stadt's old town seems quite small town / old world. For me, it would be a nice spot for a night, a nice place for walking and snooping around. Miltenberg is a nice tangle of half-timbered buildings and additionally very scenic for its location on the Main River, good for a walk as well.

I am not familiar with Beerfelden or other smaller places in the immediate area of Michelstadt; I've only spent a few hours in Miltenberg and Michelstadt combined. Maybe someone better informed on the area will hop on this thread.

Thanks Russ, the problem is, there are just too many lovely towns to choose from.

We have stayed in Bad Wimpfen at the Garni Neckarblick.

Nice place, parking in front, nice views over the Neckar River. It's about a 5 minute easy walk from the hotel to the Hauptstrasse in Bad Wimpfen.

What's your budget? As I recall, you were looking for places that were fairly inexpensive. Has that changed?

Michelstadt seems like a good choice.

Betty, we would love to stay at the Hotel Neckerblick but it is beyond our budget otherwise it would be our first choice believe me!
Yes BTilke nothing changed still looking for something charming but I guess around €70 a night if we can, €80 if it is something special.
I am leaning towards Michelstadt too, I have found this place that looks nice: www.hotel-zur-krone-michelstadt.de/
but have also been checking out Miltenberg which seems to be quite pretty on the river Main.

Maudie, it seems like we only paid about 77 Euro for one of the Panorama rooms. I know their Barbarosa rooms were less expensive and they are on a lower floor which wouldn't have been so bad.

Maudie Aug 9th, 2008 06:49 PM

Hi there Betty, just checked the website and the Barbarosa doubles are €85 and two bedded ones €76 so they will be even more than that next year. I guess we could diet for a couple of days!

Gee, I guess the prices have gone up. Oh well. I remember seeing this hotel when we were walking on the Haupstrasse, but we didn't go in:

However, you might be quite happy with your hotel in Bad Rappenau...

Thanks Betty, that place looks nice and there is a reasonable choice of rooms and prices, might be just right.
