Necessary to Register with Police in Italy?

This is so last minute.......we leave Friday for a one-week stay in a villa in Chianti. Has anyone stayed at a villa and, if so, how did you go about registering with the police station as a tourist? Do you recommend we even do that? (Six ladies staying in Barberino Val D'Elsa, Chianti region). Thanks so much..........Carmen

I bet they'll do it automatically for you when you check in to get the key. Don't worry about doing it yourself.

Your hotel, or in this case, villa, does this for you by asking for a copy of your passport. That is your "registration" with the local police.

Have fun....

From the Italian Government Tourist Board website:
Registration for Tourists
The formality of registering with the police within 3 days of a tourist's arrival in Italy is attended to by the hotels one stays with. If staying with friends or in a private home, the visitor has to register in person at the nearest police station within a 3-day period. In Rome there is a special police information office to assist tourists. (Interpreters are available) telephone: 461-950 or 486-609.

Hi th,

This was asked on another thread.

The most common answer was that you are supposed to register, but that no one does.

Every apartment I've rented in Italy has asked me to produce a copy of my passport or else they "borrow" it and copy it -- just like at any hotel. Maybe not all apartment or villa owners do that, but I believe they are supposed to.
I've started carrying a couple copies of my passport with me to give to the agent who meets me at the apartment, so I don't have to give up my own passport to them.
