Necessary to prebook tickets during winter?
 

I'm hoping that one of the perks of travelling to Europe in the middle of winter is that there will be very little in the way of queues. Is it necessary therefore for us to prebook tickets for the David in Florence (around 11 January) and is it really necessary to book a tour of the Vatican - I'm not sure how much we would get out of an actual tour compared to just doing it ourselves. What will the queues be like for Rome around 11 January (a Thursday) and is it true that the Vatican closes at 12.20 during winter? Thank you everyone

Why not? You won't lose anything but the cost of a phone call.

Uffizi and Academia Museum Reservations

The easiest and cheapest way is to call Florence 1016868 (dial around number), 011 (U.S. international access code) 39 (Italy's country code) then 055-294-883 8:30-18:30 M-F and 8:30-12:00 Sat. Florence time. You will get an English speaking operator and in 2-3 minutes YOU CAN RESERVE FOR BOTH. This is through the reservation service at the Uffizi and costs beyond the normal entry fee only about 3 euro for the service. This is MUCH cheaper than the commercial booking services.

You will not be charged for the reservations unless you use them.

Thanks Ira. I guess I probably should prebook, not sure about the vatican though, i'm feeling towards 'just turn up' and see. what do you think about this?

That's what we all did in the pre-Internet days, and often it worked quite well.

thats so funny underhill and sooooo true. Geez what what we do now with no Internet.

I visited the Accademia in February a few years ago and got right in. Same thing with most sights in Italy....definitely a perk of traveling off-season!

When we visited David last January we were two of about 6 people in the museum soon after opening. You do not need to book if you arrive early. Or even if you do not. Vatican Museums always seem to have some sort of line..we were glad we booked a tour one January day a few years ago..
