Near Munich's Airport

My spouse and I are coming to Germany and have a travel itinerary - except for the last night - we will be traveling by car from Prague to Munich's International airport and wish to stay one last night in a quaint spot - not too close to Munich but neear enough for a one hour commute in the morning.

Our plane departs at 10:00 AM and we will need to drop our rental car, so we expect we'll need to leave early - after a very early breakfast.

Any suggestions for a gasthaus or similar - we would want to stay in a quaint area allowing us to have a nice evening meal and a few beers before retiring.

How about Garmisch? It's about 90 minutes from Munich. If you want to go further afield, you might even consider Mittenwald, which is about 15 minutes further than Garmisch.

Well, we are coming from Prague and going to be going to Munich's International Airport - both are on the "other side" of Munich.

So, somewhere North and/or East of the north side of Munich would seem more appropriate.

And, we were hoping to have a name of a specific gasthaus/hotel ..... thank you, though, for your thoughts. Drv

Landshut is a nice city with a number of attractions with a castle, well-preserved 500 year old buildings, etc. It's within a 30-40 minute drive of the airport.

It's been a while since I've been there, so I hesitate to make accomodation recommendations. However, I did stay at the Goldene Sonne some time ago--looking at the website, it has been modernized since then. http://www.hotelgoldenesonne.de/index_e.html

We stayed for 2 nights at the Marriott in Freising a couple of years ago - I had points for a free stay. We chose this town for the same reason as you - closeness to the airport. Although we don't generally stay in these types of hotels in Europe - we enjoyed this one. It's close to the airport and has a frequent shuttle - we returned our car the night before departure to make it easier. The town is small and relaxing to walk around. Most of all, there is a nice "pub" type of restaurant right in the hotel that we both enjoyed - good German "obazt" if you are a fan!

Like posted above, Landshut is exactly what you're looking for. Nice old town, with many nice buildings, a great cathedral, and a castle overlooking it all. Right on the autobahn to the airport, and at about the same distance as Munich itself.

Seems to be mainly in German, but if you type "English" in the top right hand corner box, you'll get a page in English.

Enjoy, I visited Landshut in November, and really liked it!

Chteit,

I went to the web site and found the english edition but no information on a nice place to stay - our last night in Germany.

Any suggestions?

Don

Yeah, sorry, we were there on a day-trip from Munich and thus didn't stay overnight.

My husband and I stay at the Marriott in Freising which is a 10 min. drive to the airport. It is a CHARMING little suburban town which has a wonderful main street and a few fairly good restaurants. It affords a good feel for typical German day to day life in the suburbs. The breakfast buffet at the Marriott is among the BEST we've ever had. The rooms are large and extremely comfortable. The parking is indoor and connected to the hotel. The staff are terrific!

Don--if you do end up at the Goldene Sonne, let us know how it was after you return. As I said, it was years ago since we were there and enjoyed it immensely. From the website, it looks even nicer now.

I will let all of you know what I find in Landshut - at the Golden Sonne,

Thanks to all of you for your input and comments! :)
