Naxos Island: Best Way to Get Around?
Hi, Guys,
My friend and I will be spending 3-4 days on the island of Naxos this July. There's apparently so much to do I wish we had more time on the island! My main concern is transportation: what is the best way to see parts of the island if we don't want to stay in Chora/Naxos Town? We would prefer to stay somewhere like Kastraki, on the southwest coast of the island, but definitely want to spend a day or two hiking through the mountain villages.
Would ATVs/mopeds be enough? For those of you who have spent time in Naxos away from Naxos Town, in more secluded areas of the island, what worked best for you? While buses do connect the villages and I have used buses on Greek islands before, I think we may want to branch out and not be beholden to their schedules.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Do you have any experience on driving a motorbike? If yes you may want to rent a scooter, an easy way to explore the island. Otherwise you have to be more careful and hire a car. There are several website/booking systems online. Make your research and find the best one. www.carantee.com is a cheap one.

Thanks for the links, guys. I'll check those out. I have a little motorbike experience, but of course ATVs are always an option to for that "open-road" feeling without the relatively slightly more dangerous motorbike alternative. Probably not quite as fun though

If you are going to stay away from Naxos town then you do need your own transportation. It gives you the flexibility to do your own thing. The interior of Naxos is mountainous and if you are not an experienced motorcyclist then Naxos is not the place to learn. I would say the same thing about ATV's. To expose yourself to sun and wind on an ATV is ok if you are just exploring the beach areas but to go up into the mountains I would recommend a car.
Here are images of our trip around Naxos. This took three days last June.
