I agree with Chania and travelerjan, but don't be confident the bank will return your card. Even if it does, and the card was blocked for some reason, it will probably be retained the next time you try to use it in another ATM.

It is useful to have a second ATM/debit card as backup, or in an emergency you can even withdraw cash with a credit card. Of course you will pay interest on cash advances from the day of withdrawal, but that's better than being left without money. If I were forced to use my CC for a cash advance I would go online ASAP and pay off the balance from my checking account.

Here is what one very large bank in the UK does with cards eaten by their machines:
<i>All cards – either Barclays or from another bank – captured at one of our cash machines will be destroyed for security reasons.</i>

Thanks for your replies all.
I am from India. Plan on carrying debit, credit and Forex cards. Banks here also charge a fee every time I swipe my card. Will make sure I carry sufficient cash.
Also will pick up an international calling card from here. Was just wondering if there are options in Greece too.Thanks for the info mariha.
