Naxos hotel choice - need help
 

My wife and I are going to Naxos for 4 days in July and we are looking for a "boutiquey" type hotel with a pool which is located by a beach and which has easy access to Naxos town.

I have found the following 2 similarly-priced hotels:

(a) Lianos Villas on Agios Prokopias: and

(b) Princess of Naxos on Saint George.

I am looking for any recommendation and advice.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with those hotels. I stay at Hotel Argo, which is very nice but no pool. Next door is http://www.naxosresort.gr/ which has a pool, but too large to be described as "boutiquey".

Stanbr is in Greece right now, so probably not checking the forum. The best Naxos expert I know is greek-traveller, who posts on Trip Advisor but not on Fodor's. His computer has been playing up lately, but when he is back online will surely be able to help you. I dislike directing people to another forum, but in this case might be your best option. :-)

We just returned from Nissaki Beach Resort on St George beach. I don't know how price compares but the pool and hotel were very nice - better than their pics actually and the service very good. The beach isn't a pretty swimming beach but across the lot is a beautiful spot to swim but no umbrellas.

We were at Nissaki Beach last month. Agree with BeachGirl that they were really good. We loved their breakfast too. The options changed every day.

If walking to Naxos Town is important to you, the walk is short from the St George Beach hotels.

They're both somewhat smaller with, I think, less of a "Miami resort" feel to them.'

If you are still undecided, pick the hotel based on location. If you want to walk into town, choose the one in St George, or if you would rather be near the best beaches, pick the one in Agios Prokopios. Either way, it is easy to get back and forth by bus, although they tend to be packed in July.

In your opinion, all things being otherwise equal,does staying at the Agios beach location, in your opinion, outweigh any inconvenience (if there is any) of not staying closer to town?

Personally I like the ease of getting into Naxos Town in the evenings from the St George area, and have always opted for that. Agios Prokopios and nearby Plaka are far better beaches, and I have friends who prefer staying in that area. So really, it depends upon your own personal preferences.

St George is a bit of a tourist ghetto, filled with hotels, rooms, and apartments, but it's only a ten minute walk to the harbour and kastro area. Buses run frequently to Ag Prokopios and Plaka, so you can easily take the bus to the beach and come back to your hotel later in the afternoon.

Agios Prokopios has fewer choices for restaurants and tavernas, but it's easy to catch a bus into town for the evening. My experience has been that the buses going into town early in the evening are often full, and you 'play sardines' on the 15 minute ride into town. Of course if you hire a car you won't have that problem. As far as I can tell, Lianos Village is not on the beach, but on the road coming into Agios Prokopios. I'm not sure exactly where it is, so don't know how far from the beach.

That's because it's "Liana Studios" (totally different hotel - my error!).

Liana Studios advertises itself as "right on the beach". That makes a difference. Agios Prokopios Beach has golden sand, and the water is crystal clear, so you may not even want to use the hotel pool. If you don't want to go into Naxos Town every evening that may be your best choice. The northern part of Ag Prokopios Beach (away from the sunbeds) is bliss and less crowded. You could also walk past Agia Anna down to Plaka Beach. :-)

Ah! I didn't know what that area was called. We were there two days in a row as the water and sand is gorgeous! Spent most of our time down the road at Plaka beach in front of Villa Medusa but stopped for lunches in this area. You'll love the remote beauty of it, too.

Naxos Princess is situated at the very age of St george, on the road towards airport/Ag.Prokopios, so a good 20 minutes walk (most part of it on a busy road) to Naxos Town, and if my memory serves me right, it is a 5-10 minutes walk to the beach through a dirt track-after crossing the busy road.So not on the beach at all, and not in a convenient location.
Now, I have to point out that due to historical reasons, hotels with a pool are situated further back from the beach.It is a pitty to minimize your options. Either go with a hotel with a pool a sort walk to the beach, either go for the beach without the pool.
(Nissaki is one exeption, it is boutique-ish and in a very convenient location-on the border of St George/Naxos Town,BUT this part of the beach is not great and its pool/pool area is rather small and surrounded by buildings)
