Naxos - Food Allergies, Hotel Location
Hello,
My husband and I will be in Greece June 16-26.
I have a few food allergies (shellfish, egg, pork, some fruits, honey,...) and I was wondering if anyone had experience with dealing with food allergies in Naxos, and if there are good emergency facilities just in case? I assume they are in Naxos Town?
Any recommendations on hotels (luxury property, no specific budget) that would not be too far away? Any recommendations on restaurants that may be more accommodating?
If another island would be more suitable, please let me know. I've been to Santorini and Mykonos with a friend of mine who is Greek and was able to communicate my needs clearly. I usually have my allergy card translated anyway, but I would appreciate input from those who have visited Naxos before.
Thank you.

Food allergies are something nearly unheard of in Greece. Most people do not quite realise how serious effects those might have to some people. You may want to use strong words for effect, such as "If I eat egg I might die!" . Sounds extreme, but better be safe than sorry.
Vast majority of tavern staff speaks excellent English, so I do not think you'll face communication problems.
Other than this, I think you are very lucky to have a large selection of dishes in Greece that do not contain the items you mention. If you are not sure, just ask!
I don't think one place is better than an other on that aspect, my top tavern on Naxos Town area is MAro, followed by Hellinikon and To Kastro but you can't go wrong to any Naxos Tavern. Fresh food, offered on vast quantities and low prices.
There is a small but very decent hospital on Naxos Town. Extreme cases might have to be helicoptered in Athens, but otherwise it is fine to face most issues.
Naxos Resort or Galaxy hotel might worth a look for proximety both to decent beach and Naxos Town. Nissaki hotel is the closest upclass hotel to town, beach directly in front of it not so great. I hear good feedback about the renovated Xenia hotel, a couple hundrend metres inland, on the edge of town and St George beach area too. I think Naxos Reosrt would be my first choice.

In my personal opinion you are going to be just fine. Just inform the restaurants that you are allergic in few foods and they will take care of it. My personal experience was 100% positive. I traveled with a friend in Rhodes and he had cheese allergy. In every single one restaurant they offer as many options for cheese-free meals and many of them offered to change the menu and the recipes so we avoid health problem.

I would advise you, not to eat any sweet, as in Greece most sweets contain honey (as in old times there was no sugar in Greece) and fruits. Also, Greeks speak excellent English, the large majority have a Proficiency Diploma in English when they reach15 years of life, so you won't face any language problems.

We loved the Nissaki Beach Hotel. It's true that the beach in front of it isn't great, but it's easy enough to get out to some of the more spectacular beaches by car or bus. The location is only about a 10 minute walk from town, which is very convenient for sightseeing, dinner, etc.
