National Women's Day?
 

So, I read on a tourist site that March 8 is National Women's Day in Italy and that women get into all National museums for free. Does anyone know if this is true? Can I reserve tickets for the Pitti or Uffizi in advance for that date and only pay the reservation fee? I'd love to know more about this.

I experienced this when I visited. Women got into the museum we visited for free and men had to pay. Also, my friend and I received mimosa bouquets--the standard gift of the holiday--from the staff at the restaurant where we had dinner.

Oops! Missed the last part of your question. . . . I have no idea about the Uffizi's policy on this. My experience was in Urbino. I'm not sure I would be concerned about having a reserved ticket for the Uffizi on March 8, unless it was Palm Sunday or Easter (which it isn't this year).

If you make your reservation by phone, a) you can ask, b) if there's no line, you don't have to pick up or pay for the reservation. The telephone number is on the official Web site.

March 8 is International Women's Day, worldwide.

In Italy, discounted or free admissions often apply only to Italians and other EU citizens. So I think you need to ask at each venue whether you are eligible.

Free admission for women to state museums on Women's Day applies to *everyone*, as do two-for-one admissions the weekend before Valentine's Day and free admissions during Culture Week as well as on a number of other occasions.

Great! Thank you! I don't mind paying, of course, but free is always nice ;-) I'm still amazed that it's cheaper to spend the at the Uffizi than it is to see a movie in Boston!

Me again. I called the Uffizi and got prompts for hours and cost, but nothing to reserve tickets. I found a link online to do that, but it seems as though I need to pay in advance. I'd prefer to pay when I pick up in case there's no line and I can avoid the booking fee, or in case I can get in for free on March 8th.

Does anyone know a way I can reserve in advance without actually paying in advance?
