The first Eurostar to Rome leaves Naples at 7,30 and there is one Eurostar every two hours (9,30, 11,30 etc.). yet, Intercity trains, although not as comfy, lave far more frequently, cost less and reach Rome in just 15 minutes more than Eurostars. The ride is fairly short, 1 hour 45 minutes by Es, 2 hours by Intercity. The earliest train to Rome in the morning leaves Naples at 6,00 and it is a Regionale.

Hi Laura. We took the IC from Naples to Rome and it was fine. Do first class and make sure they have non smoking available. Like Alice says, the travel times are almost the same. It gives you a few more options.

I suggest not to use first classes on italian trains. The levels of comfort are very similar between first and second class, but the price for a firts class is 30% highier! On every train in italy there is no smoking on every part of the train except the areas (usually no more than the 30% of the seats) that are marked for smokers. Although the corridors are usually considered "safe" areas for smoking a sigarette, if any smoker turns noxiius, you can tell the conductor that will have him move to a smoking area to finish his cigarette.

On the IC train we took, most of the people with second class tickets had no seat assignment as I understand there is no limit to the number of second class tickets that are sold for this train.
So the halls were packed with people standing for the two hour trip. Maybe smoke will not bother Laura, but we were unable to get a nonsmoking compartment for the trip, and the smoke made the trip a lot less comfortable.
I have taken the Eurostar to Florence from Rome on second class and also on first class and found both fine.
The first class on the IC to Naples was adequate, but I don't think the second class would have been especially if it had been crowded and we would have been forced to stand for the whole trip.
Just my opinion. And from my experience, I wouldn't count on the conductor to do anything unless you have a great command of ITalian.
Two girls in our compartment, without tickets for first class and with a great deal of luggage, only got a little chuckle out of the conductor when he checked their tickets. And they were the smokers in there.
But I have to agree with Alice about the difference in the classes for the Eurostar. I didn't think that train was worth the difference in price.
