Since Bellastarr mentioned the truffles...

Does anybody have any recommendation about where to try a truffle dish in Assisi?

I am so sorry- I can't find the card this morning for the restaurant where I had several different dishes involving truffles- it was on a side street at the opposite end of town from the Duomo. But I have a feeling that you will find truffle dishes in various restaurants because it is a regional thing- I even had a pizza with truffle topping at a small local place! Again, sorry I can't find the card with more specific info!

I loved Assisi and although it is somewhat tourist trappy close to the Basilica..you can wander a few streets away and see the other side of Assisi which is captivating. It is a beautiful town.

I think you could still plan to visit Naples on your way to Capri or as a day trip from Capri. Capri is compact and can be seen in a day and a half.

I visited Assisi on a day trip last October...gorgeous weather...unbelievable views...and a completely quiet, serene experience. It was great to get out of the hustle and bustle of Florence for the day...and will always remember the quiet solitude that could be found around every twisting, winding staircase...some of my best pictures of my trip came from Assisi...have a wonderful time!!!

This is a bit of a highjack to this thread but I'll give it a try:

I was thinking of a day trip from Rome to Assisi. (This would mean 5 days in Rome and not six) But then I thought: Heck, how about just spending the night there on the way to Florence? This would be by train not car in October. Is it too much hopping around? Would it be easier just as a day trip? I am a devotee of St. Francis, so going to his home would be meaningful. Just wondering what you all may think of that?

I don't care for Naples ... most memorable aspects include burning piles of trash on the streets and stray dogs.

Assisi is a beautiful little town. Start at the basilica and walk up the hill to the main piazza.

I really enjoyed Assisi on my last trip. I would recommend staying overnight. There is a lot to see and it's a beautiful town. Quiet at night.

Jane, I'd spend the night in Assisi. As others have mentioned, it's very peaceful in the evening. Treat yourself to a long, leisurely dinner and then stroll the twisting streets in the dark and quiet.

Shadrach, enjoy your visit. For great views, climb up to the top of the Rocca Maggiore.

Well, since you are going to be staying 3 nights on Capri anyway, it is inevitable you would go through or boat from Molo Beverello in Naples to Capri. You would see the city at that time.

IMO, if you are up in Rome, go to some places near Rome. It doesn't make sense to go south to Naples, than back up to Rome. Orvieto is an option that is 1 hour away NE of Rome and not quite as far away as Assisi. There is a beautiful duomo, ceramic art, charming city centre, etc. Likewise, a day trip out to Villa D'Este in Tivoli is nice too (if you haven't seen it).
