Naples Trash Going to Sardinia

Officials have finally, according to today's fish wrap, started to tackle Naples appalling garbage problem, where due to local landfills being full and authorities reluctant to create new ones, the first garbage-laden barge arrived with Neopolitan trash in Sardinia

Italian officials are appealing to other localities to accept Napoli garbage as well

so there may be light at the end of the garbage tunnel

The light would be if people finally started to recycle like they do in the rest of western Europe. The whole garbage business is mafia owned, nothing will change.

The good thing is, when people have to literally swallow their own poison, they'll be under some pressure to fight the criminals.

Yes apparently the mafia has been bringing garbage to Naples area for years and even disposing of some of it on roadsides and in riverbeds - one reason local landfills are full i guess.

No, but the mafia owns all the landfills and garbage workers. Blocking any change.

Big business, just like drugs.

And here I thought the post heading meant all those Mafia guys were moving off-shore!

There is a quite extensive article in Spiegel about "trains of shame" (shame of Italians over inability to build a modern waste disposal system) - most of southern Italian trash is transported by freight trains to Germany, sorted (automatized sorting machines) and in part recycled, in part burned off for electricity.
There are a few big sorting/disposal sites in northern and eastern Germany which were built with much more capacity in mind...

I wonder if the barge will be turned away from Sardinia, and will wend it's way to Mexico or other Caribbean nations before returning to Naples full & rotting.
