We will be arriving at the Naples airport around 7 p.m. and need to get to Sorrento since our hotel is booked there. What is the best way at that time of day to get to Sorrento. We know our options are the Bus, the Train, or Ferry. What are the vaiours price, length of travel time, views for each option?

For either train or boat you will have to get into Naples by bus or taxi (about 30E).

You might want to consider a private Limo.

Is there a Shuttle Service from the Airport to the Train Station?

If you mean private vans, they will cost as much as a taxi for two people.

If you really want to save money, you could take the public bus from the airport to the central train station in Piazza Garibaldi (very seedy at night), then the Circumvesuviana commuter train direct to Sorrento in 70 Minutes (departures every 30 minues). Total cost will be about 4 Euros, though you may be very tired and may wish to book a private limo from the airport.

The Circumvesuviana train departs Naples at 19:39, 20:09, 20:39, 21:09, 21:39, 22:09, 22:42 (last train). Travel time is 68 minutes and fare is Euro 3.10.

Naples is a small airport, it is entirely conceivable that if you arrive BEFORE 7 pm, you can collect your bags from the 2 baggage carousels there and walk outside to the front turnaround and catch the Curreri Viaggi bus that leaves for Sorrento (7:00 pm). It delivers you to Piazza Tasso in Sorrento, takes 1 hour and costs 6 euros/pp (you can buy the ticket on board). If you have carry-on luggage, you're in even better luck re: time, you walk off the plane and out to catch the bus.

When I emailed Curreri Viaggi ([email protected]) re: the price of a taxi from Sorrento to Naples airport (and vice versa), I was quoted 70 euros.

As the others have suggested, you can take a bus into the Piazza Garibaldi, then catch the Circumvesuviana train down to Sorrento for 3,10 euros/pp.

Unfortunately, you won't have time to take a bus down to the Piazza Municipio, walk across the street to the Molo Beverello port and catch a ferry boat (Metro del Mare) that goes back and forth from Naples to Sorrento. The last boat leaves at late afternoon!

Well what if we took the ferry to Capri? We are thinking of changing out hotel reservations to something in Capri instead. The plan was to go to Capri first thing in the morning from Sorrento anyway. So, I guess it would make more sense, to go straight into Capri. But I guess we would come across the same issue - how do we get to the Ferry port from the Naples airport?

Ferries don't run at night. Just use a Naples hotel and catch an early ferry (the slower ones give much better sightseeing) or check out one of the local museums/palaces.

I arrived late and took the airport bus that goes to a square near ferry port (not the yucky train station area). But since everyone else got off at intermediate stops, the driver asked where I was staying, and maneuvered the huge bus right up the narrow alley I was headed. Luckily I had the address handy and a small e5 bill which I told him to keep (he had no change anyway).

The problem with Capri is that the only transportation option available is the 9 p.m. fast ferry from Molo Beverello. If your flight is on time, you'll probably make it (taxi or airporter bus to Piazza Municipio, walk to Molo Beverello). If your flight is late, you may be stuck the night in Naples.

Our flight is coming in from Paris - Easyjet at 6:40 p.m. Do they usually run late? Thats why I am giving myself 2.5 hours cushion time.

So, if we miss the last ferry - there is no way in to Capri? That would really be awful if we have reservations in Capri. I would imagine they would have a penalty - not to mention how difficult it would be going door to door finding a place. I guess it might be safer to find a place in Sorrento then? We really don't want to stay in Naples since we haven't heard many good things about it.

The safer option is to spend the first night in Sorrento. Capri could work if all goes according to schedule, but you have virtually no fallback options if something is delayed. I would not want to incur the huge expense of hiring a private motorboat to go to Capri after the 9:10 ferry has departed.

yes this is very true. Plus - taking the Ferry first thing in the morning will allow us to appreciate the views rather than to travel in the dark.

So after doing a little research, I think we can get the Alibus form Naples airport at 7:00 to the train station and take the Circumvesuviana into Sorrento. From there, I am assuming you can take a SITA bus to the hotel at that hour of the night?

You may be able to walk to your hotel from the Sorrento Circumvesuviana train station. If not, I would take a taxi.

The Circumvesuviana train station in Sorrento is in the middle of town. Dependent on where your hotel is, you could walk to it, or, as GAC suggests, take a tax.

Based on your 6:40 pm arrival, it is entirely possible that you can still catch that 7:00 pm Curreri Viaggi bus leaving Naples airport for Sorrento. Italy is notorious for not-so-on-time departures and may be running a few minutes late, which would benefit you.

Alternatively, if the other options fail you and you find you must stay overnight in Naples, hotels in Naples near Molo Beverello (the port where boats depart for Capri, Sorrento, etc) and Piazza Municipio are not that bad. It is the area around the Naples train station and Piazza Garibaldi that should be avoided. There are American-chain hotels there, you could do a search on-line for their specific locations in the city. I would almost recommend that -- you could have a fabulous dinner in Naples (home of famous 'margherita pizza'), stay overnight and wake up refreshed and ready to take a boat to your destination. Just a thought....
