Naples to Sorrento transportation

Will be spending one night in Naples early Sept. then heading to Sorrento the next day to pick up rental car and begin Amalfi Coast trip. What is the best way to get from Naples to Sorrento? Should we take train, ferry or hire private driver? Just the two of us and our luggage.
Thanks!

We caught the train from Naples to Sorrento, very easy and cheap - about 5 euro each one way. Journey takes about an hour. There is not much room for luggage and when we travelled, the train was quite crowded but we managed. The train line from Naples to Sorrento is a private line, you can do a search on this forum for Circumvesuviana.
I have heard the ferry trip is nice but doesn't run in rough weather. If you can afford it, go for the private driver. At least then you would be able to stop along the way if you want. We travel on a budget and wouldn't contemplate such a thing but many do.

There is a subway line that runs from Naples to Sorrento called the Circumvesuviana. It's not exactly the most luxurious train in the whole world, but it works. Depending on whether you take a "diretto" or a "direttissimo" train (slow vs. not-quite-as slow), the journey will take anywhere from about 55 to 75 minutes.

There are three or four Circumvesuviana lines. Make sure you take the one that goes to Sorrento!

Hi

If you take the Circumvesuviana, you can get off at Pompeii for a tour.

They have a luggage office at the entrance.

There is a bus just outside the arrivals door at the Naples Airport that drops you off in the center of Sorrento. It was pretty resonable.

There's also a hydrofoil that makes the naples - sorrento trip; I think it takes about a half-hour.

Hi Kelley,

Can't you pick up your car in Naples? It would be much more convenient.

hire a private driver - 95 euros and worth every penny!

The train schedule is on www.vesuviana.it. It's by far the easiest way of doing the journey. Traffic congestion on the roads around Napoli and the Sorrento peninsula is notorious.
