We were recently in Naples and at first a little hesitant as everyone along the way had drew back in horror when we mentioned Naples as part of our itinerary. There were several stories relayed about how it's not safe, how you'll get mugged/pickpocketed. We probably looked like the silliest people when we got off the train with as guarded/cautious as we were being! Don't let these undeserved stories scare you if they are relayed to you. We had absolutely no problems and found Naples to be a beautiful place. As with any other big city, keep your wits about you and use common sense, but do not be afraid as there is certainly no need to be!
As far as Positano from Naples, we were offered a tour with a private driver from our hotel (Marriott Renaissance Mediterraneo (by the way, loved this hotel!)) for I think around 240 euros (sounds expensive but considering it was an all day private tour with just the 2 of us we felt it to be a bargain). I wish I knew the name of the company to relay to you, but man, what an incredible day! Our driver's name was Mike and he did an incredible job. Anytime we wanted to pull over to take pictures he stopped right away and pointed out the best place for photos. We started out with a 2 hour stop at Pompeii (probably didn't even cover an eighth of this enormous but fascinating place, but glad we got to see it) and leisurely drove along the Amalfi Coast with stops in Sorrento, Amalfi and Positano. We then had lunch at the La Conca Azzuro restaurant, which is on the side of a cliff overlooking the sea - WOW!!! What an amazing memory we made with this trip! Have fun - I'm so jealous that you're going! You will definitely love it!
ciao! Scott
