Naples, Sorrento or Amalfi?

DH and I will be in Naples for barely 7 hrs (cruise) in Mid May, and need to decide whether to stay in Naples or take a side trip to either Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast.

I know we will return (we've been to Italy 4 times already, but have not been south of Rome)

Suggestions? Thank you!!!!

I really liked Naples. If the museums are open the day you are there enjoy the city and then return to amalfi etc. another time and stay a nice long time. Have fun.

With so little time I would see the single most important sight: Pompeii - as long as the weather is decent. Be prepared for lots of sun, no shade - so have a hat and bring water with you.

(It's true that many of the items from the ruined city are in the museum in Naples - but I think touring the ruins of the city is much more fascinating.

For (barely) 7 hrs I would stay in Naples. We'll be there for 2 days in a couple of weeks, and while one of them is for Pompeii, we'll spend one day in Naples. Here are a few things I am considering: the Archeological Museum, Cappella Sansevero, Chiesa Santa Chiara and pizza, of course.

decisions, decisions, decisions ....

Thank you. We've been to Pompeii, so I think we will enjoy pizza in Naples, wonder around as much as we can and book a nice long stay on the coast for the next trip to Italy.

Thank you all!

Herculaneum - some very pretty buildings, even some paintings and wooden parts still intact, I think more beautiful than Pompeii, more complete buildings, closer to Naples, smaller, so easier to see. You could easily see it and have a few hours still for Naples. It is really very special and most people do not have time to see it.

Since you have been to Pompeii, Herculaneum would be a wonderful trip, almost a companion piece to Pompeii, yet very different.

The underground excavations in Naples are also interesting.
