naples, sorrento, amalfi + matera & alberabello

planning to visit southern italy in early september, wondering if it's do-able to cover sorrento, positano, amalfi, capri (or procida) together with matera & alberabello in 10 days.

originally we plan to stay there for a couple of days as a base to visit pompeii, sorrento etc but heard that naples is and may well be full of trash throughout the city. should we skip it and choose another base instead? i would love to include matera and/or alberabello in this trip if it's not too much hassle, but is it realistic?

most grateful for any advice.

Hi W,

You could pass by each of them in 10 days, if you wanted to.

What are your priorities, A & M or Naples and the AC?

10 days are perfect for the AC---Puglia demands another week.

My priority is the amalfi coast for it's beauty. So I guess you two have answered part of my questions.

Regarding Naples as one of the bases, any advice? Is trash piling up now? Not much news from here.

From what I read in books, Pocida seems quieter and charming too. Is it more worth staying than Capri? And I couldn't decide between sorrento and positano too, though amalfi is a definite must.

In May I enjoyed the Best Western in Positano and

Especially www.hoteldelfino.com Sorrento awesome

views over to Capri Otel.com $80/nt also

Majestic Palace for my Pompeii Scavi visit...ok not great

That would be enough for me in 10 days.

Naples and the Circunvesuviano had been cleaned up some

still sort of a dirty dogy smoggy gritty city not my cup of

tea... Happy Travels,

I spent about 8 days in that area and thoroughly enjoyed it, but it was definitely a very fast pace that required a lot of advance planning and prioritization of what I most wanted to see and experience. Here's what I did: 2.5 days/2 nights in Naples, including 1 day to visit Pompeii and Ercolano; 1 day/1 night in Capri; 2 nights/1 day in Ravello and Amalfi; 1 night/1 day in Salerno, including a visit to Paestum; 1 day/1 night in Matera; and later in my travels, a few hours in Alberobello. I could easily have doubled my time in this area and still found more than enough to enjoy. And note that I had the advantage of traveling solo, which I suspect makes it a bit easier to sustain a very full schedule.

You're interested in visiting a few places I didn't visit, and you might be able to squeeze some of them in if you are willing to travel really hard. I'm not sure I would recommend it. And remember that you'll need to plan on travel time to get to the area and to get from Matera or Alberobello to an airport and then to your home.

Hope that helps!

wonderful trip! I spent 5 days in Amalfi in June and I especially recommend aurora hotel www.aurora-hotel.it
Right to the sea it's the best place to go around. You can visit Positano, Pompei,Naples, Ravello and go back in the late evening and have a relaxing dinner.
Bye

Yes, the rubbish is beginning to pile up in Naples, but it's localised in a few places and wasn't too bad a few weeks ago. I found the city fascinating and the "reality" refreshing after the tourist roil of Rome in June.

I don't know if it's best, but I think you can take a train from Matera to Bari and change there to a train to Alberobello.
