Naples - Positano ferry suspended?

Hello everyone --

We're leaving Monday and trying to figure out the best method for getting to Positano from Naples. I've checked out the Metro del Mare site and it says the Positano stop is suspended. Doh!

Trying to avoid the buses, we're now considering the Eurostar to Salerno and taking the ferry from there. Would that be efficient? We fly into Naples at 12:40 pm. Here are my specific questions:

-- When the train arrives in Salerno, how easy is it to get to the train station? Are buses available right there? How long is the journey to where the ferries depart?

-- How long does the journey from Salerno to Positano by ferry take?

Thanks in advance! -- h.

Oh! Just noticed one other thing... which train station in Naples would be preferred from the airport: Piazza Garibaldi or Centrale? Thanks!

Hi H,

What is so awful about the buses? Positano is closer to Naples than it is to Salerno.

The train station in Salerno is less than 10 min from the ferry dock.

Go to www.mappy.com and enter "Piazza della Concordia".

See See http://www.salernocity.com/comune/tr...i/costiera.asp
for schedules.

Hi ira --

Thanks for the reply. =) TexasAggie's recent trip report freaked me out a bit regarding motion sickness on the buses (something I am prone to).

So, since I can't go direct to Positano from Naples, do you think I should follow the usual Circum. train to Sorrento, followed by the bus to Positano instead of the Naples-Salerno-Positano idea? Ultimately, I'd like to do whatever is quickest.

Thanks again! - h.

We just came back from there earlier this week. I can confirm that this ferry wasn't running while we were there. There is some work going on at the Positano dock; perhaps that has something to do with it??

As an alternative to the Circumvesuviana, there is a bus that runs straight from the Naples airport to Sorrento:

http://www.curreriviaggi.it/pagine/agenzia_viaggi.htm

You could then take a SITA bus to Positano, or alternatively a ferry (although I believe the bus lets you out at the train/bus stop, which is some distance from the marina). It seems like there would be fewer logistics involved, since you don't have to get from the airport to the Circumvesuviana.

My daughter gets motion sickness, and she didn't really have any problems with the SITA or internal Positano buses.

We ended up springing for a driver when we went from Positano to Naples, but we had luggage, some purchases, etc., and we needed to get to a fairly obscure address within Naples.

Have a great trip!

Great info, ms_go... thank you so much! It looks like the airport bus to Sorrento is an hour long trip, making it shorter than the Circum. train from what I can tell.

I thoroughly enjoyed your pictures, by the way. It looks like you had a wonderful trip. Thanks again!

Hi h,

>...recent trip report freaked me out a bit regarding motion sickness on the buses ...<

So you thought you would rather go on a boat? :)

>..do you think I should follow the usual route...<

Take the bus from the Naples airport to Sorrento.

PS: Piazza Garibaldi and Napoli Centrale are the same station.

Have a lovely trip.

Good point, Ira. I mostly only get car sickness, though. I have some wristbands to prevent it, so I think we'll give the airport bus - Sorrento thing a try.

Unless anyone has experience with going through Salerno to share? =)

Re: the boat transportation out/in to Positano. Is nothing running? Does anyone know why or for how long?

I was planning on ferries and hydrofoils for Positano/Amalfi and Positano/Capri in Sept. I sure hope everything is running by then!

Dayle - Positano/Amalfi, Positano/Sorrento and Positano/Capri are running. We used some of those ferries over the past couple of weeks.

It's the direct Naples/Positano service that currently is suspended.

I'm not sure if metrodelmare is running, and/or how many boats are regularly going from/to Positano, but I can tell you for sure (since I can see it when I drive by Positano), that they're working on the docks of Positano to repair it (from last winter), and enlarge it.
if I'll get more details, I'll add them.

Mille grazie, Go and Francesco!

Francesco, I still have your e mail for driving services. As I get closer to Sept, I will e mail and see if you have a Fiumicino/Positano trip that will allow a single to join.

I'll also report back after we return in a couple of weeks... I can't believe we finally leave tomorrow. =) Thanks to everyone for the last minute help!

I'm so glad to find the info about the bus from Naples airport to Sorrento. I looked at the website but does anyone know if advance reservations are needed? Or do I just find the bus when I get to Naples?
