naples port to pompeii

Any advice on how to get from the port in Naples (we will be on a cruise ship) to Pompeii? the guidebooks make it sound confusing but I am hoping it is feasible to get there without booking an expensive tour. Thank you for any advice you can give to make it easier to get there.

Take a taxi to the train station, follow the signs in the station to the Circumvesuviana trains (lower level), get on the train to Sorrento and get off at the Pompei Scavi stop (about 35 min. ride). It's really quite easy and not at all confusing.

Thank you! Do you know if taxi's will hold 4 people or if we will need to take two of them? Also, do you advise seeing the Naples Museum with Pompeii artifacts before or after visiting Pompeii? Does the train go near the museum in Naples or is it best to take a taxi there too?

Jazy - There is a bus service from the cruise port to Pompeii.

Alternatively take tram No.1 from the port to the station.

A taxi will take 4 people if you prefer that option. Be sure to agree the fare before you get in. You have been warned ...

Hope this helps ...

Steve--thank you, is there a particular bus to take or will it be obvious once we are at the port? taking a bus sounds easier than negotiating with a taxi or transfering from tram to train--true?
