Naples - Piazza Garibaldi - Safe at Night?
 

Hello...

We have a hotel reservation at the northwest end of Piazza Garibaldi (#32) and have a train to catch at 11:00 pm. How safe is it to walk along the piazza at night? Is it lit up? I feel silly taking a taxi three blocks, but will do so if recommended. We won't have luggage because we're only in Naples for the day, having arrived in the morning -- our luggage will be stored at the station.

(Note...in case you're wondering, the hotel is just so well have a place to hang out between trips to Pompeii and the Archaeological Museum and the train...not staying overnight.)

Also...how late can you pick up left luggage at the station.

Since your destination is Palermo on the overnight train there are no earlier train options for you to catch....

Unless things have changed it is a pretty sketchy looking scene right outside the train station. I would take the taxi especially at that time of night.

Dissenting opinion - I would walk. 10:30 is dinner time in Naples ; ). Even if that's slight hyperbole, there will be many folks about.

I was in Naples for a week last May and walked around that area a few times. My sense was it's kinda funky/gritty looking, but not dangerous per se. Similar to around-the-train-station areas in many big cities.

ETA: Use common city-sense and stay aware of your surroundings, of course, but I don't really think you need to be on high alert.

Once there, ask at your hotel to be sure, but with no luggage, I would walk. All of Naples seems a bit gritty to me, but we never felt unsafe. I have found people there to be most friendly and very kind.

Not according to cops' data. Or not according to the annoying locals (mostly teens) who dine in the Square till 1 AM.

This. Ask the hotel when you’re there. While I was in Naples twice, I have no knowledge of what it would be like to walk just a few blocks to the train late at night. We may all have our own comfort levels and general knowledge of Naples’ reputation, particularly around the train station, but walking 3 blocks doesn’t sound bad to me, especially if you’re not walking with your luggage. The hotel would be the best people to ask.

I agree with Leely. I very much doubt if anyone is going to knife you, or grab you. You should just make sure your belongings are carried in a secure way. Seedy does not mean dangerous.

Seems like the biggest wildcard is where you can store your luggage. It may make more sense to store it at your hotel.

Yep...we'll have to store it in the hotel, because the left luggage place at the station closes too early. There's a place that's open late enough a few blocks away, but that just means more walking around.
