Naples in mid March/early April
 

I will be traveling to Naples in March, but I realy do not know anything about Southern Italy. All of my travels have been in the North, and the most south I had traveled was to Rome, which is not even Southern Italy. Any suggestions what to do in Naples, and what day trips, if any, I am able to take? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

As I recall, you hated Rome.

The best advice I can give you is to avoid Naples. Hire a limousine to take you from the airport straight to Positano.

Lawyer 630, yes you did hate Rome. Since you hated Rome (or had a strong dislike for it) you definetly will not like Naples! Go directly to one of the small towns south of there. Sorrento, Almafi, Positano etc. Have a beautiful trip.

The three of you are always helping me...I really hope that I did not offend anyone by stating my opinion on Rome....it is not that I hated it, I just thought it was too overwhelming, and comparing it to Florence, well, let's just say if I did not have friends living there, I probably would never go back, at least for now. As for my Naples trip, I have 3 weeks there. Will I enjoy it at that time of year? Ira, I will now read your trip report....

Lawyer630, I do not mean to be rude assuming that your thread is for real. But I am totaly confused. You found Rome completely overwhelming. But you have made plans to spend 3 weeks in Naples??

It is not the month of March that I am questioning. It is that you are sincerely going to Naples for 3 weeks when you found Rome overwhelming. I know I am repeating myself but seriously there is something here I do not get.

What do you think Naples is like? Or are you referring to the area south of Naples and not the City of Naples?

Patrick, that may be the answer!! Well if that is the case hopefully Lawyer will have time to take day trips and perhaps an overnighter a few times.

I didn't have time to read about your feelings on Rome.

You asked about Naples. There is the World Class Archeological Museum, which contains the Farnese collection of Sculpture, very beautiful, and many artifacts (the most amazing mosaics!) unearthed at Pompeii, which you should try to see before taking a day trip to Pompeii.

That time of year is around Easter, and if you are there during Holy Week, there will be many processions, some of which are very folkloric and fascinating in Naples, various places on the Amalfi Coast, and easpecially Sorrento. You can visit Capri for a day, Ischia, and Procida (islands in the Bay of Naples. you can sample the best Pizza in the world in Naples, and you may be turned off by the noise and traffic there, so might want to spend part of your time on the Amalfi Coast. These are very basic suggestions, and there are lots of possibilities, but you can easily do this research in these forms, or if you din't want the banter here, in guidebooks. Good luck.

Thanks again to all who responded...Well, this post is for real, and I am planning to travel to Naples in mid-March to early April just for pleaseure!!! I have friends from Naples, and of course they know their own city, but I do not want to seems ignorant, so I would like to tell them some specific things I would like to do. For exapmle, some day trips? Also, how is the weather at that time of year? LoveItaly, I apologize, but what is the difference from Naples to the south of Naples? Any responses would be greatly appreciated!! By the way, Ira, great trip report!!!! Any suggestions also on short overnighters to different small cities of towns?

Glad you liked the report.

You can easily overnight in Sorrento or at any of the towns on the Amalfi Coast.

I would very highly recommend a day trip to Paestum. I'm not sure what the public transportation options are if you don't have a car, but probably your friends would know or could easily find out.

We spent an unplanned day in Naples on a recent trip to Sorrento, and I found the city fascinating. Rick Steves has some good walking tours in his book on Italy.
