Naples Garbage Crisis over or not?

I haven't heard anything so I was just wondering if there was ever a resolution to the garbage crisis in Naples and Campania?

I hope it is finally over.

The problem has ebbed and flowed for many years. I don't think it ever completely disappears. The most recent news article I could find is about a month old.

I just heard yesterday tht it's still there, but NOT on the Amalfi Coast.

Jean is correct in saying that this issue has been going on for many years. And is COmorra related. There is a chapter on it and the history of it in the book "Gommorrah" by Roberto Saviano, which recently came out in English, and is an excellent read for anyone interested in Naples. But not a tourist Naples.

I just returned from a trip to Italy. We flew into the Naples airport and drove to Sorrento. There was garbage piled up everywhere in Naples and looked like the garbage had not been picked up for weeks. But in Sorrento and other towns along the coast it was not a problem.

Pity the residents of Campania. Somehow, the government/Comorra/whoever can get it together for the tourists but not for them.

Jean, I think you may be right. When I returned from Rome a couple weeks ago, I talked with a young woman at the airport who had been to Naples just for a daytrip. She said she didn't see a lot of garbage, so I think maybe they're cleaning it up in the areas that the tourists will be seeing but apparently not in other areas.

We were just on the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento, and flew into Naples. Our driver said that the trash problem is outside central Naples, in the suburbs, and it is far from over. So if you visit the city you'll be fine. There were no issues in any of the places we were.

This report - news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7266755.stm - helped me decide to switch my first three nights in Italy from Naples to Capri. That's in early April. I'm still hoping things will be better by mid-May, when I'll be staying in Naples on the way home.

I was in Naples on 3/5, and the garbage crisis is certainly not over. It is very much in the city center, you will see the piles as soon as you walk out of the train station.

That said. I encourage you to not to let it detour you from visiting Naples, which I found very interesting. There was no stink associated, as the weather was pretty cool.
