Naples

Has anyone rented a car in Naples and drove to Pompeii and the Amalfi coast in Italy? What is it like to drive? My husband loves to drive so that is not an issue. He has driven many times in Europe.

Thanks

We drove that area and didn't think it was such a big deal. We found the driving easier and better than driving much of the West coast of Ireland (better roads for one thing) and certainly less hairy than the California coast south of Mendocino -- now that was scarey!!

it was more difficult driving out of naples, than the AC!

Hi Anita,

The only problem with driving the Amalfi Coast road is that it is very narrow (about 22 ft wide [I measured it]) and the tour buses tend to clog it up in the season.

Be prepared for a slooooooooooow drive.

Does hubby have experience on motorcycles?

Hi Ira,
Yes, my husband rides motorcycles. Is it better to rent a motorcycle for the day?

AAArgh! The traffic in Naples made Rome look like a ride in the country. The Amalfi drive was also quite challenging with two tour buses trying to get by one another on narrow curvey roads. A motorcycle might not be a bad idea.

Last summer my husband and I were on our third trip to Italy in 4 years. At this point we have covered most of Italy and we do it region by region and we always drive. We spent two nights in Naples the last time and loved it. We had quite a slow entry into the city, quite a bit of traffic and once we got to our hotel we parked our car and took taxis the whole time. We started in the Amalfi coast and on our way to Naples we spent the day in Pompeii. So many people scared us for the drive on the coast, it wasn't bad at all and we were there in July.
