travelbunny...what beats that??!! that's one of my top faves too.

neopolitan...yes! one of the greater pleasures of breakfast is spilling your syrup on your pancakes and not worrying about what it drowns. i prefer sausage as my side when i have pancakes.

i had a good thin, rectangular pastry in barcelona with almonds & sugar on it. on the second day, it had chocolate too!

in london, i had yogurt and banana chips every morning for breakfast.

and, i love the irish breakfast. brown bread scones, irish butter and tea...hmmm..

Funny thing is, I love the breakfast wherever I am! And reading this thread has just brought it all back... Iceland, Germany, Amsterdam for loads of meats and butter and good bread and hard boiled eggs and yogurt and... Tartine au beurre and perfect jams with cafe au lait in France. Grits with salt and butter or cheese and scallions down South. Dim sum in Hong Kong.

Oops posted too soon - but you get the drift! Here in NYC it's always an everything bagel with butter or with smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers. Good strong coffee everywhere. And you can't beat the yogurt in Europe - yay to unpasteurized milk! One more I'd add is iddlies with spicy sambar and coconut chutney in India (or Jackson Heights, Queens). Yum!

Okay - I'm hungry this afternoon and this post caught my eye!

My favorite breakfast (which I'll be enjoying in 10 days) is in Switzerland. Fresh berliners (doughnuts), crusty bread with homemade jams that my husband's stepfather just made, the best hot chocolate in the world, and strong coffee that makes you stand up and yodel...Ahhhh - the best!

The breakfast buffet at the Best Western Tigra in Vienna was absolutely outstanding both for its variety and quality. Wonderful cheeses and breads, fruits, etc., not to mention the best hot chocolate we had anywhere in the city.

My absolutely most wonderful breakfast was in Helsinki, where a farmer's market was setup on Wednesday morning behind the Intercontinental where I was staying.

At 07:00 a lady set up a stall to serve breakfast to the sellers.

A thick slice of fresh-baked bread smeared with butter from her own cows, a slice of home-made ham, a slice of tomato from her garden and a cup of fresh coffee.

Two of them cost 1/5 the price of the so-so hotel breakfast.

I rarely post but just couldn't resist this thread ... Mmmmm ... I LOVE breakfasts! My all-time favourite breakfasts have been in Jamaica ... there is nothing I love more for breakfast than the wonderful moist warm Jamaican banana bread, fresh warm croissants served with guava jelly, fresh sweet pineapple, a mimosa, and strong Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, all enjoyed overlooking the beautiful Caribbean. In Europe, my favourite has been the breakfast buffets at various Bavarian and Austrian hotels and pensions ... nice crusty rolls, assorted meats and cheeses, butter that somehow tastes fresher than it does at home, Nutella, good strong coffee ... yummy.

I've just got back from the US and I find it strange that Americans posting here find the English/Irish breakfast so alien.

In all the diners that I had breakfast, they served a combination of the following, bacon, sausage links, fried eggs, toast, tea or coffee, the only difference was home fries (fried potatoes) would be included.

Also I'm sure CS was referring to getting pancakes, bacon, sausage etc together with maple syrup. (Never had McDonalds' Big Breakfast!). This combination is also extremely common on menus in the US, from my limited experience.

I love the smell of fresh baked bread in France. I also long for the smell of a "Denney's" when I get home.

In Florence at the "B&B in piazza della signoria" they served fresh rolls, thin sliced ham, fresh fruit and endless pitchers of blood orange juice. I never drank so much juice in all my life...
