First term journalism students are taught that the formula "5W1H" is the key to their future success. A successful, rewarding, meaningful and memorable trip to Europe is equally dependent upon the planning that results from "5W1H". WHO is going to Europe? WHY am I going? WHAT do I hope to achieve? WHERE am I going? WHEN am I going? HOW do I get to where I want to go and to what I want to achieve? That formula is the essence of travel planning. Whether you answer those questions with a fifteen page minute by minute itinerary for a two week trip or with a dozen key words scribbled on a 3 x 5 card is irrelevant; personal preferences and personality quirks dictate the plan recording method most effective for an individual. What is important is that the six questions be attacked in depth and answered with careful thought.
